Well the my box is my sig tuned to 35hz ok. Well its gets pretty low, but not punchy if you know what i mean. Man i can't explain it. Im drunk bear with me. Umm would my sub sound good tuned to 30hz or 32 or what? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

i tune my listening boxs to 40 personally. alot around the forums do thiers in low 30's. dunno why. unless they have alot of music that drops below 40 hz. must be playing alot of test tones and bass c.d.'s that i dont have. cause i rarely hear a song with something below 35 hz....

when i built boxs tuned below 38 hz, it always seemed -less- loud. this was with rap music. not bass tones. usually when tuned around 38 - 42 hz its going to exhibit the strongest bass between 40 - 50 hz. alot of music falls into this category.

to me 40 hz is the -loudest- boxs (to the ear). tune them higher for SPL (on the meter). this is just what I myself like. i have no idea about your preferences and couldnt even begin to tell you how/where to tune your box at. but i'm just relating to you my experiences //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well i listen to mostly rap music. And most of rap music has the fast deep bass. When ever i play Lil' jon throw it up, it sounds like a have 2 15's in my trunk. When i play say a tupac song, it sounds like i have an 8' or 10' sub.....

(not saying you are a noob) but...... when I first started ported boxs and was relatively "virgin" like in the car audio world i used to ask alot of questions. they always gave me very vague answers.... and it was annoying. but to tell you the truth i find myself giving those same vague answers. those are the only honest ones there are. but anyway

the best way to learn is to go out and get some "hands on" experience. experiment with different size boxs tuned at different frequencies. all subwoofers react different in different enclosures. the more you work with 1 specific woofer, the louder you will make it (most of the time). no one design or woofer or tuning frequency is going to play every note in every song loud. it just wont. my boxs dont, and nobody on this forum can honestly say there isnt one song out there that sounds like crap/doesnt play loud in there setup.

heres an idea....... get a box (lets say 2.5 cuft of internal volume) and make a hole for a round port (or 2). then start out with a certain length of port...... say tune it at 30 hz. have the port stick out of your box (so it doesnt take any internal volume). after you get a good feel for how that 30 hz tuning sounds, cut those same ports down till it tunes it at a different frequency. you will need a program to tell you what its tuned at. but the smaller you make the port (assuming you keep the same amount of ports, and the same diameter, with the same internal volume) the higher its going to tune it. listen to each tuning frequency with multiple songs at multiple levels and at different positions.

it would be very time consuming but you can test a bunch of different tuning frequencies with the same internal volume and ONLY CHANGE THE PORTS. it will also give you a feel for how loud your favorite songs are going to play. i dont know if you want to do that or not, but it just clicked in my head and i thought i'd pass it on to you

If your not getting any "punch" and want it try turning your lo pass filter up to 100 or 120 hz.... that should get you the "punch" your looking for....I'm the exactg opposite I don't like punch and my LP was set at 100 hz so I turned it down to 60 and got rid of most "punch"

Try some different tunings out like termlab said, he's actually got a pretty good idea with the removable round port (just make sure it's always sealed nice and tight when you play music).

You'll find that different frequencies work well with different tunings, I personally like low tuned boxes because I get the deeper bass notes to come through and still have enough of the high or "punchy" notes to fit my needs. Only way to know what sound you want is to really try different things out though.
