Help..........new battery and alternator and now I'm blowing fuses like crazy

Subscribed....interested in what the issue is.

I think the suggestions mentioned have been good ones. Interested in seeing if your Fosgate amp will turn on when the HU is on. I would still get the HO alternator tested before purchasing another unit, that way you will know for sure if it has an issue or not.

A lot of us have multiple amps and I haven't seen one of us that's running a single run use multiple inline fuses at the battery. Not sure wtf you're talking about. Too bad the OP wasn't more careful when redoing things. I don't think going from a 0 to 6 was a big deal as long as it's a decent Distro. Did you fuse the + from the alt to the battery btw just curious? Should have done one small bit at a time instead of installing everything and hoping you fixed the issue live and learn. My 2 cents is on the ground.

Thanks for your interest, Whitemax.

When you say get the alternator tested, do you mean just take the vehicle to AutoZone or O'Reilly and have them test it, or does it need to be brought to an actual auto mechanic's shop. Only reason I say that is that I have been told by a few folks that the tools that AutoZone and such have to test batteries and alternators will not work correctly on higher output alternators and AGM batteries.

I'm going to try to spend some time today re-checking wiring and just making sure that every single thing is "perfect". Problems like this always frustrate me, because while it could be something "big" like the alternator or an actual part that is messing up, it could also be something as "small" as a connection just slightly shorting out somewhere.

Actually, I'm curious to see if the fosgate amp turns back on when the HU comes on, as well. The other day, that is one reason why I was so stumped. All of the amps shut down even though there was power going to them and the HU was turned on. My first thought at that point was that the fuse in the HU blew, but that couldn't be the case because the HU would have turned off completely. So, then I'm wondering how I could have possibly lost the signal in the remote turn on. At the same time, it could have been that the amp went into protect mode and shut down. I'll be interested to see.

Negolien -- The amp on the side with the un-blown fuse seems to be ok. The amp that WAS on the side where the fuse blew was a kicker amp. I don't know if it is ok, but from the amount of smoke that poured from it, I'm guessing not.

I had a RF 801S on that side as of yesterday afternoon. There is no fuse in the distribution block at this time. I took it out when I shut things down the other day. However, that amp is showing 9.6 volts across the B+ and Ground inputs right now, even with only the ground cable, and no others, plugged into it.

Try Autozone or O'Reilly. If they can't do an accurate test they should at least be able to point you in the right direction.
I agree, some of those guys can actually be very helpful in pointing you in the right direction. If you don't get help from one, try another.

Talk about coincidences....my alternator just died on me. Car was almost stalling and barely moving when I came to a stop at an intersection. It barely made it to the side of the road where it finally stalled out. Tried to jump it, but battery was completely dead. Had it towed to the dealer, they just called and told me the alternator had a short. Guess I will be getting a new battery here pretty soon too.

The belt squeal could be solved with some belt dressing spray found at an auto parts store for under 5 bucks. Spray both flat and ribbed sides of belt, sometimes it will work on the first try, sometimes it may take a few applications, or it may not work at all but for five dollars i'd try this first. About the stereo i'd look for a short, look where the wire is running through a firewall or could have some abrasion somewhere between the batt and distribution block.

alt appears fine. most cars charge between 13.5-14.5.

What it looks like is something is up with your wiring and/or amps. for the kicker to start smoking like that, it seems like the power/ground was switched. If that is not the case, then the power supply in the amp wet bad and was shorting. That would also be the cause of your fuse blowing and the rest of your issues.

There is a lot of useless info in this thread. Crazy how there are some people in here that just like to hear themselves talk and give out tons of useless/inaccurate info.

This guy is correct, 13.5v+ is normal. Hell my truck on a hot *** day 105°F charges 13.5. I know you said you ran new wire but go back and recheck it. Could be a short in the engine bay or in the cabin by a bolt or SOMETHING. Dont give up just go ahead and retrace your wires and make sure you don't get confused with + and - when hooking up amp. It may be silly but it happens sometimes.
