HELP: Installing HU

Asked on another forum and really no help at all, searched on here and nothing came up so now hopefully one of you guys can help me out.

Having problems with my 87 caprice. Been trying to get this Sony HU installed. I already took out the factory stereo that was working fine by the way. I bought an wiring harness from ebay which comes to find out does not plug into my factory harness so I dont have to cut it... Nothing plugs into it.

So I cut the factory harness and tap into it and directly wire the harness for the stereo directly to the factory car haness and I get no power. So I take the stereo and wire it up to the cars battery and I get power to the stereo. I checked all the fuses under the dash and on the HU and all of them are good. Anyone have an idea whats up or what I can do?

If nothing works Im selling this HU and just buying an new one, which I really dont want to do right now since this one was free.

well if it works when you hook it to the battery then its not the headunit. Check your wires again, are you sure you hooked everything up right?

Yeah,

 

I did the following and no power when I put the key in.

 

Constant 12V+ Orange to the HU yellow

Switched 12V+ Yellow to the HU red

Ground Black to HU black

hmm..well im not sure, but like i said, if its working at the battery then its your car/wiring/fuse, and not the headunit so buying a new one wont fix the problem. Might be better to take that money and take the car to a shop and have them install it, probably around 50-60 bucks.

Get a digital multimeter. use it to check if the wires you are feeding the deck with are what you think they are. try the deck in a different car.

I was thinking maybe it was the Constant 12V+ Orange which I think is the battery wire. Maybe something sparked or touched each other where I pushed the HU back in and turned the key.. But if that was the case then Id have an blow fuse some where right? which I dont seem to have cause I checked all of them.

The dmm will also allow you to check the fuses even if they look good by eye sometimes they are bad. Or you have a fusible link somewhere that is burnt up.

use a test light and see if you have power there

also check to see if the HU is getting a solid ground. I had that problem in my car with my hu. I had everything hooked up correctly and it turned out to be a bad ground to the HU.

I'm 99 percent sure it's a blown fuse in your fuse box. Also don't forget the antenna.
