Got my alternator today.(Need help fast.)

wow lol thats the problem with the belt not reaching, go google where the belt tensioner is on your car and then try it, i bet the belt fits

jus get a bigger belt, measure yours add an inch or two go to kragen and check it out. your dad dont help you? poop its just an alt? you have to have the power hooked up, and you have to have the ground hooked up. pretty simple. to bad you werent over here id hook it up in a half second. but yea you should have a belt tensioner, its a weird looking piece of metal bracket that has the look of a c amost on it and theres a bot on it. that should be your tension, or your have a different tension, my trucks a 96 so. good luck kiddo. if all else fails have someone from a checkers or kragen go to your house one day and have them help you, its not difficult. too bad you dont have any help

I would just modify this bracket a little. No big deal.

Remove the part in red.

And the tensioner should be a pully thats not attached to anything like the h2o pump, ac, power steering. Should have a 3/4 bolt on the front to release tension. Its there if its a sepentine belt system.

that looks like the tensioner dude. if oyu start goiing by what people say mmats, make sure you dont hack into the wrong thing ight.

my car doesnt have a tensioner pulley. i have a bolt that runs into a mounting bracket on the alt, and buy tighten and loosen the alt is my way of tighten the belt

lol, ya it is the tensioner. Like GM style. once the belt is on, just slide it over to tension and lock the bolt down. But still, that top of the bracket will limit its travel. You may need to modify it or make/buy a suitable one.

yeah i think thats how mine works too because i do the same thing to tighten up or to loosen it

thanks man ill see what i do

Dude come on... That bottom piece that your alt bolts into is the tensioner... I don't think your car has its on spring loaded tensioner.. Its a 4cyl right? If so, you bolt the top of your alt in first, make it a little loose so you can move the alt. You then slide everything together on the bottom mount and make sure the alt is pushed all the way towards the back. Then slide your belt on and pull ur alt forward till the belt is tight. If its a larger case and larger pulley you will need a bigger alt.. Not an inch bigger.. An inch bigger is going to seem like the belt is to big

Also don't modify your bottom bracket you risk throwing off the geometry of your pulley line.. A smaller bolt will work just fine, worst comes to worst make a bracket that bolts onto your alt that will then bolt up to the bottom bracket.. I've done cars like yours and ran into the same problem man don't sweat it

The top is totally loose when i bolt on the bottom piece too and it wont slide at all the alt is to big and is hitting on the bottom i think a new longer belt will do just fine

i took the alt out heres the bottom

Ya use a smaller bolt or fab up a bracket to fit ur alt and will bolt up to the bottom that is ur belt tensioner so don't make that weak or affect the geometry of it.. Then you'll be set to go.
