gain setting?

I know that there is a million threads about this already but i cant find the tutorial in the consolidated list anymore... I'm trying to find the dmm gain setting instructions... I did search but couldn't find the list. It's probably right under my nose... One last thing though, if i have a 1000 watt rms amp rated at above that, what output voltage do i look for with a 40htz tone?

Some people recommend doing this with the speakers unplugged, and others use a load resistor or they leave subs connected - which is it?
