gain setting question

ok im doing my gains, dont have a dmm. all by ear. the kicker manual says to turn up the gain control until i hear audible distortion, then turn it down a little. well with this amp, the subwoofer doesnt get loud until the external bass boost is turned on. kind of acts like a HU's subwoofer volume control. so if im setting the gain by ear, listening for distortion, should i have the external boost turned up (18db octave) and leave the xover and bass boost on the amp at 0? cuz how am i supposed to hear distortion when the subs arent on. should i take out the external bass boost and set the gain control?

when setting the gains on any amp, you should make all the necesarry adjustments BEFORE turning the gain up. What I mean about this is if you plan on using the bass boost move it to where you would, then turn up the gain using the instructions.
