First time speaker installation

Hi, first of all I want to preface this with saying that this is my first time ever attempting to install speakers in a car so if this question sounds ridiculously amateur, it is.

I have a 2005 Hyundai Tucson, just bought two pairs of Infinity Reference 6032si speakers for the front and back doors off of Crutchfield. Taking off the door panel went surprisingly easy, but once I took out the factory woofer and tried putting mine in, I got stuck.

The factory speaker is fixed to the bracket that screws into the door frame, so I need to use the bracket that came with the speaker. A set of holes on the bracket lines up fine with the holes that the old speaker was screwed into, but since the speaker is smaller than the opening itself, I have to somehow attach the speaker to the bracket. Since it came with no extra screws or other material, I'm not sure what the best way to do this is.

I went to Home Depot and bought some screws and locking nuts that fit the holes on the bracket and speaker, but the nut on the other end is too big and therefore rubs against the metal on the door frame when I insert the speaker into the opening. Just to see how it sounded, I tested it out, and the speaker nearly sounds as bad as the other 3 factory speakers, distorting horribly at high volume with virtually no bass.

My question is, what can I use to attach the speaker to the mounting bracket? I'm trying to do this installation with as little custom fabrication as possible, since I probably lack the tools and know-how to do so.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm on the verge of having Best Buy install them at $70/pair just so I know it's done right.

Thank you all in advance!

it would help to have pics, barring that, I would make a bracket out of some wood and a jigsaw. trace the mounting bracket and cut it out, drill holes for the bracket to mount for the door. then cut a hole in the middle of it for your new speakers to attach to. that's the cheapest, easiest way to do it afaik.

sounds good. it's nice to know what your up against. i still think you're going to have to make a bracket or buy one. $20 jig saw and a cheap piece of plywood is still going to run a lot less than BB and you'll be set up to make anything in the future

I can just imagine that turning into a disaster in a hurry, haha. Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you recommend using the bracket I already have to mount the speaker onto? It's not that the holes don't line up, I just don't know what the best method of mounting it would be.

well the pics would help with that. is the speaker too big or too small for the old bracket?

if you can trace and cut on the line, you can make a bracket! sometimes it's easier to make a new one than modify the old one.

Basically, there is no old bracket. The pics will explain this, but when I unscrewed the four screws to remove the factory speaker, it looks like the speaker is permanently fixed to the bracket with the holes for the screws on it. It's all one piece. So that leaves me with just the mounting bracket which came with my new speakers. It fits, but I'm unsure as to how to attach the speaker to the inside set of holes, since the speaker is too small to fit the holes that will be used to secure the bracket to the door. Does that make sense?

Edit: Also, it seems like I'd run into the same issue if I made my own bracket, since the method I'm using to attach the speaker to the bracket now isn't working (small screws and locking nuts on the other end, which are too big and make contact with the metal door frame)

I can email you the pics right now so you know what I'm talking about, if that would help. Just let me know.

do you have a drill? drill out holes where the nuts would go into. ok that sounds perverted.

i have a hyundai too. i think i ran into your same problem. i have an 03 tiburon.

speaker on the left look familiar? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif i made that template in the middle. i made myself a 1/2" thick spacer using that template and screwed the plate to the door. then i used 1/2" sheet metal screws to attack the speaker to the bracket. I put in little plastic anchors into the spacer so i didn't ruin the wood. the carpet is there to prevent rattles and help for a finished look when door is back on

hope this helps!
