I recently aquired the rainbow CS 265 X-Plain which are 80w rms.

Im running them off an orion 3002 amp which does 75x2 @ 4.

But when the HU is 62/62, and the gains on the orion are at 50%, the midbass pops during heavy bass parts. Most rap songs I hvae to turn on the xover ont he HU to 50hz to stop that from happening. it IS running free air, but they are made to run free air, so I dont see why that would be a problem.

Also.. the tweet gets hot.

any ideas as to why this happens?

oh. and the CAL25's that come with that set.. live up to their repuation //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

wow i dunno man it seems like you are clipping your stuff. i mean 62/62 is really pushing it and also w/ the gains set at 50% is crazy. i have my gains set w/ the HU at 60/80 and the gains are probably 1/3 or the way. so yea turn down the gains and see what happens.

also as 3.5 said, up that xover pt to around 80hz.

I figured as much.

The site said 80 RMS, so I was wondering why my 75w is making it clip..

I guess I'll have to play with it a lot and make sure its at optimal performance without clippping. I can always turn the xover on during rap songs, during rock, just make sure theyre down a bit.

Other than that.. they sound quite amazing.

thanks for the quick replies //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

well you are making it clip because possibly the gain is too high. also you can be simply be clipping your HU with it set at 62/62 already. if you don't know, the hu sends a sine wave to your amp. the gain on the amp will simply increase the amplitude of that sine wave. if the gain is too high, the sine wave will then be clipped and hence possible damage to your speakers.

and thats what i need to avoid...

well I know now that shallow speakers cant really handle that much bass, so I put it on 80hz, and its running perfectly.

I'm just going to get some coaxes in the back, high pass the amp, and dont high pass the HU so my rears can compliment my subs when I get my sub amp in.

also, the comps let off a smell when theyre on kidna loud. that is just the glue right? I believe it is.. im just double checking though. haha, it worries me.

Not so much that they are shallow, but that they are midbasses. Not designed for bass. Like I mentioned above most prepackaged component sets are not made for sub 80hz use, as they expect you to use a subwoofer. I'm sure with further tuning and a solid baffle you can get ~63 hz with 24 db slope. But 80hz is an ideal point where midbass to subbass transition is smoothest-specially with a 6.5". I run 8" midbasses and I can get them to play 55hz easy , but its not ideal and doesnt sound right- i have them at 80hz 12db as well.

thanks for the response. I would deaden the doors, bu tim not sure how much longer I'm keeping the car.

but I'm keeping them at 80hz, and playing with them at 62/62 with the most demanding songs and adjusting the gains accordingly.
