By that logic why put a fuse near the battery at all? The fuse is there to protect the wire not the amps (that is why the amp has it's own fuses). By protecting the two 4 gauges by a single 160A you could be asking for trouble. If I remember correctly, an anl style fuse will hold up to teo times the rated current for over 5 seconds.
I actually had a wire come loose in my car, luckily it didn't short because it was the wire from my battery to the fuse holder. I could imagine the problems I could have had if it had shorted. After seeing that happen I would tend to err on the side of caution.
