Do i need to break them in, and if so, how?

More like bump them for 20 hrs, and then they are broke in //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif. . .Actually the amount of time depends on the speaker and how hard you play them. As soon as I know there is nothing wrong with my setup (no crossed wires, etc.), I let it rip. . .

Uhm, no. All the break-in period is is the time it takes the new suspension pieces to loosen up to their normal/nominal compliance. Until these pieces have loosened up, the sub will actuall be stiffer, and harder to 'blow'. You do not have to baby the drivers until they are 'broke in', just play them however you want.

If anything, you may want to tweak the gains a bit lower once they break in, as they will tend excurt slightly more than when the suspension was new and stiff.

this discussion is alot like the is there a break in time for cars. some say yes some say no.

my uncle has been a GM at a car dealership for many years and hes pretty set on you should drive a car like you would normally drive it right off the lot. he said most cars he sees with problems are the ones that were babied and then someone went out and really got on it when they thought it was broken in.

same with subs, ur gonna get a split answer. just saw a thread of a guy who got new subs and from the manufacturer they suggest a break in period so.....all depends on who you ask.

This is nothing like cars.
And AQ is nuts for saying their subs need a break-in period.

If that were true, we never would have had to read your little story about your uncle who works for a dealership seeing broken cars that weren't broken in correctly.
logic>you
once again, reading>you he suggests there is no such thing as "break in" cars good to go off the lot.

just supporting the some people live by breakin and some dont.

Well, the breaking in of cars thing is outdated. Cars today are, for the most part, broken in from the factory. Naturally, the first oil change is still the most important, but you really dont see too many metal shavings in the first oil, nor do you see problems anymore from improper break-in. This is a thing of the past, at least from what I have seen. Anybody who has individually built an engine from all new parts will tell ya about a real break in period - which does exist - which manufacturers take care of in the factory. Just like properly bedding new brake pads and rotors.

The whole break-in thing makes theoretical sense when considering subwoofers, but I don't know of any concrete evidence that can prove the theory....

And again, who cares what your uncle says about breaking in a car? My Aunt Matilda breaks in here panties when she buys new ones, should I quote her also?
Im suggesting nobody cares what your uncle says about CARS, this thread is not about CARS. And you trying to interject CARS into this break-in discussion, just like people ALWAYS try to do (because everyone knows about breaking in a car's engine) is totally irrelevant.

BTW, most modern cars already have a break-in procedure at the factory these days. As if CARS has ANYTHING to do with this discussion. My Aunt Matilda's underwear is just as relevant.

Oh I read you right the first time smart guy, you aren't talking rocket science here. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif You are just too stubborn and weak willed to admit you presented a lousy comparison. I hope your fragile ego survives this.

The problem here is that if you play the speaker lightly, it will not break in!!!!!! The suspension has to move for it to break in. If you don't get the cone moving, you can play for 1000 hrs and nothing will change. Once you are sure everything is connected correctly and there are no problems, let it rip.

With a car, you are taking it easy and performing steps to allow parts to wear together. . . not the same thing. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
