Deicent comp set

I'm curious as to why many people are recommending to run the PG's with 150w per side. These speakers are only rated at 60wrms, and 120w peak power. I realize most people don't run their systems at full volume all the time, but I don't think I'd be recommending overpowering speakers by this much. I would think you could run them with 75w a side and still have plenty of headroom, and much longer speaker life.

 
I guess from reviews and such thats like the ideal power and they are supposed to sound better with that kind of power rather than 60

Just like the Pioneer PRS comps, they are rated for 50w RMS, Ive heard them with about 125w RMS and they sounded really nice and were not getting overpowered

i explained this in another thread regarding these but i'll say it again.

i have mine on a ZX550,2 which can do just over 205x2@4ohms. i set the gain to 150 watts rms per side with a -3db 1khz tone which is 24.5 volts a/c. i then played music very loudly, about the loudest i would play it cause it's really loud, and i honestly couldn't stand it much louder. and while playing the music very loudly i stuck the leads on my DMM on the speaker terminals on the amp and i was only getting voltage in the mid to high teens, obviously it was jumping around quite a bit because it is music and not a solid test tone. so mid to high teens, for example 15.5 volts is 60 watts, even at 20 volts thats only 100 watts.

so in my conclusion, you don't need 150 watts per side, and the speakers will probably never see 150 watts for more than a split second. but get than amp that can do 150 per side to have the heeadroom so you can get them loud and not worry about clipping and hurting anything. speakers will take way more CLEAN power than rated at, but will die with less than rated CLIPPED, DIRTY power.

 
i have never smelled any burning, or heard any ounce of distortion or bottoming out or anything unnatural. they will take it fine all day long.

trust us, there are probably a good dozen or so people on here pushing them with an amp that can do 150+ per side and i have never heard of anybody blowing them to date.

everybody who has gotten them and installed them correctly with good power has liked them.

 
I still say they'd sound every bit as good with 75w of clean power. Some of you may be getting a little carried away with this headroom thing. You don't have to overpower speakers by more than double their rated power to get a sufficeint amount of headroom.

None. Makes no difference. You don't need 150 watts to drive a 60 watt speaker. It's really simple electronics and overdriving them by more than double their rated power doesn't make them sound any better. As long as you're using an amp that's capable of delivering the speaker's max power rating without clipping, they will sound every bit as good.

Do us a favor, tcguy. Set the gains for 60w rms, and give us a compare/contrast review between that and 150w per side. I'd like to know if all the reviews I've read recommending 120-150w rms per side are for good reason.

maybe i'll try it on tuesday, but tomorrow i work from 9am-8pm. will it really make any difference since my amp can do waaayyyy more than that though?

i have checked the voltage at the amp/speaker terminals while playing music pretty loudly and they aren't really getting anywhere near the 150 watts i have them set for. i'd say most of the time (when i play them loudly) they are getting around 50-80 watts rms per side.

i'll try setting it for 60watts per side though and see what it's like anyway. it's pretty easy to do.

 
Are you measuring the voltage while playing a test tone with the speakers unhooked from the amp?
when i set the gain, yes thats how i did it. i used a -3db 1khz tone and set the ac voltage to 24.5 volts.

but i have put the DMM on the amps speaker terminals while listening to music pretty loudly (speakers hooked up listening to music) and the dmm was reading in the mid to high teens. which if you do the math(the same math you do when you set the gains) the speakers are only actually seeing around 50-80 watts, maybe a bit more on some good peaks. then you also have to consider impedance rise as well, not sure how much the impedance really rises. but you get my point.

Yep, and that's absolutely normal. If you set the gains for 60w, the speakers will likely only be getting 20-35w rms each during music playback. So about half of what they are getting now.

 
^thanks for confirming what i was 99% sure was true. :)

this is getting to technical though, which is taking the fun out of things. lol. all i care is i have them on that amp and they take it fine and sound amazing IMO. i know i may have a crazy amount of headroom but i wanted that to be extra safe. i don't want to have to worry about blowing them every time i want to play it loud. i want to be able to crank it and not worry about clipping even one little bit.
