Deadening the roof...

Well, I've got an '88 Cherokee, and after finally getting a sub stage and actually having some real output back there I've got rattles and flexing everywhere.

It sounds like ***.

The question...I've got no headliner because if you've ever owned a Cherokee you'll know that they like to sag and are near impossible to fix. It's just bare metal up there there now painted with bedliner.

Would deadening the entire roof make THAT much of a difference? Or would I be wasting money and time seeing as it won't be cheap since it's a pretty big area.

I'm thinking thats what's causing most of the "tinny" sound that I'm hearing also.

What would be the best deadening to do a roof, spray on or the mat stuff?

I've never delt with deadening before so I don't really know what to expect.

it depends on whether or not you can hear the roof making any type of noises when you're playing the system. If it does then deadening would probably help some since it might reduce the flexing of the metal. Iono, just a gues

I can definitely hear something from up there, and it's flexing like mad.

The rattles are coming from my back hatch, but theres clearly something with the roof too.

deadener will not help enough. you need to add structure supports/braces to the roof to actually stop the flex, add expanding foam and shit inside crossbeams etc.

Deadening the roof would help i think. There is a few different products you could use. Second Skin Spectra might be a good option since you have no headliner... or you could do a layer of mat then cover it with some spectra...

i'd start with using some expanding foam to fill in any spaces/gaps in the crossbeams and then going from there.

On the roof in my blazer I added some expanding foam, 2 layers of raammat then covered in ensolite. I would say it helped quite a bit, but I also have a headliner as well.

Fix the worst rattles first. Deadener, spray foam in crevices.

Your hearing two different problems. The "tinny" sound is high frequency reflections due to the exposed metal ceiling. It sounds like your in a tin can, because you are. This is easily fixed with carpet or padded fabric covering.

The rattling is resonance due to low frequencies sounds. Much harder to fix.

Use the expensive butyl based deadner, like Raammat, on the roof and doors and cheaper "Ice & Snow" on the floor and hatch.

The expanding foam is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that.

I knew the tinny sound was because of not having a headliner but for some reason it never crossed my mind to just glue some cheap black carpet up there.

The rattling I'm not too worried about. I know where the majority is coming from, and thats the plastic molding on the hatch. I'll just throw some foam in between.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'm going to try some of these when I get the Jeep back next week.

Yea, Id definitely throw some foam and a good triple-layer of mat up there to see if there's progress

Would it be difficult to glue carpet over that?
