Controversial thread, unintentional Racism.

Good luck arguing with facts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gifHere are a few off the top of my head, I'll go ahead and find sources and cite them if you request.

-innercity teachers get paid ~20% less than suburban teachers

-around 50% of inner city students drop out

-average per student expenditure is about DOUBLE for suburban kids.

If this doesnt lead to worse educational conditions, then I dont know what does.
Where? In what locale(s) is this happening? I'm not saying that you're wrong but now you've got my curiosity piqued...

I'm not comfortable with police officers that don't know things that were required for me to pass what, 4th grade? If you aren't qualified for the job, you're not qualified, regardless of what you look like.

In what way does not knowing how to do long division not qualify you to be a police officer, hell, I bet over half the people on this board cant do long division, even I wouldnt remember if I wasnt in college and had to do it here..

Being the youngest child of a math teacher I won't be included in the half that cannot successfully navigate a long division problem //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

If they can't do basic math it makes me wonder what else they don't know...police officers are supposed to be respected, and its hard to respect dumb people.

Considering the test will only be revised in the math area, you dont have much to worry about //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

As far as respect, if you dont respect a person because they are not as smart as you, a police officer no less, then thats your character flaw, I dont think (well I hope) that most people dont agree with you there. Not to mention you wouldnt be able to tell an officer cant do math, I watch "Cops" ALOT, and never have I seen any real math happening //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Its not just the math...a basis in any mathematics is reasoning. If the cop fails math what are his chances he can logically reason? Put that same cop is a tough situation and watch him fail and use poor judgment and get someone killed...

you have a point, but what if they change the test because people can't pass the english part of the test, etc, etc. And i'm not trying to say i don't respect dumb people in general, i guess i meant to say "dumb people with authority over me".

Umm, I'm pretty sure cops go through alot of training, not just a test, if a guys cant reason, he wont pass that training.

And math is not simply logical reasoning.. like I said, I bet half the people here cant do long division.

You correlating not being able to do certain math and not being able to reason in a difficult situation is plain ridiculous...

Again, it all depends if it affects their job performance. I personally dont see how not learning some math can affect job performance as a police officer. English may or may not, depends on the scope of that part of the test. Reading comprehension is important IMO, as is simply knowing the language enough to communicate well. But knowing nitpicky grammar rules etc isnt too important.

Please explain how math is not logic and reasoning...you cant add 2 and 2 and get 5...its not logical. Granted upper level math takes a certain understanding but the basics are taught to kids in 3rd grade for God's sake...how can a grown man not be able to comprehend that?

And training for police officers to get their service guns is an absolute joke...but thats another story.
