Computer fan constantly running.......How to get it to stop?

most oem pc's arent going to let you mess with temps/fsb/multi in the bios

If its a stock Heatsink you can reapply the TIM(Thermal paste with some better stuff) I also have a Zalman 9700 Heatsink if your interested in just replacing it. You can go into your Bios and set the fan rpm speed up after a certain temp, You can raise it 10C so it won't turn on.
All of this asuming your talking about the Cpu fan right??

No, to slow it down so it doesn't kick in as soon. Most Cpu fans go 100%rpm at 65C on 45nm chips.. Most chips can go 15% over the percent of heat that the manufacture reconmends. So running it at 70C at 70% Rpm will be quieter and keep the chip cooler. I still rec getting a aftermarket cooler. It depends on your chip what cpu are you using?

Dust could be 1 problem, maybe slowing down the fan?? Have you seen stock heatsink Thermal paste?? That stuff is shit and is no good in 2 years of use... Replacing the TIM(thermal paste) on the cpu and blowing out the stock fan would solve your problem.

After the day gets done and all the bashing ends the problem still comes down to the heatsink and the thermal paste/dust...I haven't seen a fan stop moving because of dust. . .

You really need to quit suggesting all these radical solutions. He's obviously not running a gaming rig, the stock cooling system is going to be fine.

Dust builds up on the heatsink, forming an insulating barrier around the fins, decreasing the amount of heat the heatsink can draw out. Also over prolonged periods it will hold more heat than a cleaned one. All of which leads to the fan running more often and at a higher RPM.

In 4 years of doing computer maintainence i have NEVER had to replace the thermal paste, even on OEM jobs. But I get to clean out dust nearly 1-2 months.

When all the bash calms down in the end the heatsink is shit, I hate stock heat sinks I have 4 of them as paper weights just laying around.

Check out my avatar that's a quad core q6600 at 1.48vcore loading at 50C....You never replaced OEM thermal paste lol....OP just open the case blow on the heatsink check your temps with HW montior and report back

In DH's situation he does not need to go to that extreme. Just dust it out as suggested. But CHASE007 is the supreme PC guru.

In my personal rig that I built for DVD ripping/editing I run a sophisticated cooling system with an expensive fan and that handy dandy aftermarket thermal paste.

Yea i have never replaced OEM thermal paste? How many computer systems have you managed? I have had 4 labs of 25 computers each, all of which ranged from 1-7 years old. As long as your not overclocking/doing some serious processing the OEM paste is going to be fine and all you need to do is keep the inside of the machine clean.

Is your $60 solution going to work? Probably. Is my free solution going to work, probably. Which one is cheaper and alot easier to do?

70c is pretty hot for a CPU temp.

mine on stock AMD heatsink/fan setup runs at 30-33C with a room temp of 72-74F in the house.

Actually your first suggestion was to pull the entire thing apart, replace the CPU thermal paste then reassemble it. Thats exactly what I would imagine a novice computer user would want to use /sarcasm

Your just further proof that anyone can read an online tuturial how to overclock a machine, but when it comes to basic knowledge and in the field hands on experience it trumps anything you can read in a book/online.

Computers I built? about 18 all custom with custom every thing. I can show you some of my work if your interested, all high end builds.

Well When it comes down, the op should blow on the hsf then report back and if you still have problems then its the heat transfer. . . Do you agree with this?
