Computer fan constantly running.......How to get it to stop?

Buy a new heatsink what cpu are you on, guessing your on a 775 because thats alittle new tech.

I have a zalman 9700 for 35$ shipped its 60$shipped on new egg

When all the bash calms down in the end the heatsink is shit, I hate stock heat sinks I have 4 of them as paper weights just laying around.

Check out my avatar that's a quad core q6600 at 1.48vcore loading at 50C....You never replaced OEM thermal paste lol....OP just open the case blow on the heatsink check your temps with HW montior and report back
I got a q6600. I bought a Zalman 9500 on sale a few months back, but I'm not in the mood to build again. I wanted to see how the i7 was as well as see what AMD would come up with. I might do something in September.

You're speaking like a person that builds. DH is not a pc builder. If he was there would be no thread about this. So if you were doing my job and one of these attorneys came to you with this same issue you would handle it by getting him an aftermarket fan?

Computers I built? about 18 all custom with custom every thing. I can show you some of my work if your interested, all high end builds.
Well When it comes down, the op should blow on the hsf then report back and if you still have problems then its the heat transfer. . . Do you agree with this?
I'd love to see the half assed machines you built, when you think the problem with dust is that it cloggs the fan. I mean seriously, how the hell is that even possible.

Yes I agree with that, perhaps because that why it was the first thing I said to do...

I7 is very nice I just did a built 3 weeks ago with a 920 for a friend... Very sexy they oc quiet well. . They run warm but they can handle temps of 70C.. I plan on grabbing a 940 In august for my b day

As a non-computer tech guy who runs a pretty basic Dell I can say that my fan runs very quietly at all times until I start multitasking or try to watch videos for an extended period of time which is normal I'm sure. After a while the dust does build up to the point it looks almost like a filter in front of the heatsink (I have a duct/cowl piece covering the heatsink leading to the fan). When it builds up like that my fan ramps up and runs like that non-stop no matter what tasks I'm performing. I open it up and use a brush and canned air to do a little maintenance and presto. Quiet fan operation once again until the next time the dust builds up.

Just sayin'

DH. Get a can of air and blow all the dust out of the computer. Then use a lil brush of some sort and get all the lint and caked on dust stuck in the fins of the heat sink.

Thats assuming its your CPU fan that you are talking about.

Op Should do this. . . .I just have so much good thermal paste laying around I go ahead and take off the stock heat sick( Which you can leave the mobo on) re apply it and clean the hsf and slap it back on free of charge. .

The one thing I wonder in this thread is Chase007, why do you insist on writing "TIM", but then putting (thermal paste) next to it.. Defeats the whole purpose of the acronym. Only thing I can imagine is you're assuming most people would not know the acronym, in which case you should just not use it. It doesn't make you cool //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif.

Sorry, I thought some one would bash me if I said thermal paste and not TIM....

Ever work on a OEM dell or HP mobo? You go right ahead and try to pull the processor fan/heatsink off without pulling out the CDROMs/powersupply/mobo.

Those things are so tight to fool with its a PITA to plug in ide/sata cables

He thinks he's the only one that knows how to build. I've been doing this for a while now Chase. It's just not that big a deal anymore to see that first POST screen.

Sorry, I know it wasn't very technical. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I just thought a non-tech perspective would help somewhat.

For what it's worth, I did learn a few things in this thread. Make me want to try and build my own next time around. So thanks. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I imagine DH's computer is like a lot of basic PC's. The fan on the back is just for the CPU, with a duct of some sort pulling air off the heatsink. My friend has a similar big box PC and the thing sounds like a ****ing vacuum on warm days, until he dusts it out.

It was actually very helpful and supported my argument completely. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Building your own desktop is the only way to go.
