Computer Build for a grand, what ya think?

You're right about that. graphics cards should continue to come down in price now that ATI has finally brought out a series of GPU that can hang with nVidia's finest, and processor pricing will always trickle down over time.

I didn't read the whole thread....
Are you overclocking? If so, dump that cooler, it's won't do much good on the Q6600.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233018 will work great.
I'd dump it regardless. Stock quad HSF's are just short of completely worthless, imo.

Another HSF I'd recommend would be the SD964 with retention bracket. I'm using the somewhat equivalent Thermalright Ultra-90 with an Arctic Cooling 120mm PWM fan, and it keeps my 3.2 GHz 6400+ at 28C/47C idle/load.

He picked out the AC freezer7 Pro, but it won't cut the mustard. The 65nm quads can start roasting even at 2.8.

It might be alright in a case with very good airflow and the installer knows what they're doing. Here are a few posted reviews for the 775 quads using the AC F7P:

Pros: Cools your processor, Quiet.

Cons: These plastic push clips are just unacceptable, they are a pain to use, and i never feel like the heatsink it attached good enough, i should have gone for a bolt on. Oc'ed Q6600 temps are 48c/71c - that seems high, I'm only at 3.06 Ghz

Other Thoughts: Go for a better one to save yourself some headache.
Pros: Amazing cooler, i got great temp reduction after applying this cooler. Idle of my Q6600 G0 went from 39C to 30C. After overclocking the cpu to 3.5ghz, my idle is about 33C. Full load is about 50C. Prime95 full load after about 12 hours of stress testing was in low 60's. Comes with already applied Thermal paste and it seems to be working fine. Thought about wiping it off and applying my own but that would be a waste.

Cons: Had some trouble clipping the last clamp down after the first three. It seemed stuck and wouldnt clamp down but i eventually got it...

Other Thoughts: It was either this or the 120 Ultra Extreme. Took the cheaper alternative and i am quite satisfied.
Pros: Cheap, effective, and easy to install (follow the directions, almost). See other thoughts for more.

Cons: None. Will probably buy 3 more. This is a keeper.

Other Thoughts: If you follow the directions, and/or have put on an Intel HSF before, this is a 5 minute install. DO NOT try to push the pins in and twist them. Push them in and they will lock automatically. Someone below explains this better. P5E WS Pro (also an awesome product), Q6600 (quad core, 2.4GHz), 8GB Corsair RAM. FSB at 425, stock voltages. Was 2.9GHz, now 3.4Ghz and seems to have more headroom. I'm in the US, so I'll state *F. Ambient temp is about 80*F due to 5 machines in 1 room. In Phoenix. In July. Idle temp was 102. Now 92 with the higher overclock. Core temps idling was around 129-131. Now 112-115. Running Prime95 (100% CPU) core temps were around 185. Now 160-163. I'm typing this while Prime95 is running, and you'd never know it. I'm really impressed. And thanks NewEgg for good service and fast shipping.
...this last one translates to:STOCK HSF TEMPS

Idle - 54C to 55C

Load - 85C

AC F7P HSF TEMPS

Idle - 44C to 46C

Load - 71C to 73C

This is what I was planning on getting as they have a great combo deal running with the Q6600 chip.

BTW I plan to overclock to 3.0 at maybe 1333mhz, ive never overclocked before but it sounds like a safer bet anyone know about changing the voltage at that type of overclock. Also as for ram I am kinda clueless on the 4-4-4-15 kinda stuff, can i mess with that stuff to in the bios to overclock the ram? THanks guys for your help I cant wait to get this stuff up and running. Most the parts will be in monday

I am currently looking to build a beefy little machine, wont be running any games but will be using photoshop and lots of movie utilities frequently...whats the opinion on the AMD Phenom 9600?

i did check it out, it seems to be fairly rated, i havent had any experience with them yet, i have been back on intel for a long while now and I was considering switching if I can find a good chip...

well sounds like the q6600 is about the same price and rated better so I would go with what more people like but either sound good

good look gettting opinions here lol... check em out on newegg
