Car's louder with trunk open?

I was fooling around today after I hooked up an amp to my door speakers. And I opened the trunk to show people, and I got in the car. It seemed a good 3 db more with the trunk open, so I had someone close it. And sure enough it lost the 3dbs, it hits the same at ~42 hz but at 30hz man that's a big diff!

What would suggest to do to get that extra loudness? Or just be happy as is?

Caps my voltmeter //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif, and I originally had the port back when I put it in, but I switched it port in and it was better.

I notice if you put down the front two windows, and keep back windows up, its louder.
I've noticed that to even louder if you open a front door, all I can figure is loading off the trunk and deflecting off the windshield is the loudest way to go and opening the door or rolling down the window allows it to breath more making it louder and opening a rear door kills it because it escapes before deflecting off the wind shield? just guessing

If you have everything facing forward and sealed from the trunk, opening the trunk would be a loss. It might be hard to get 4 subs firing forward... so you should upgrade to 2x 15" subs and face subs and port forward.

I was thinking about that, just selling stuff sucks.

My car is exactly 1.7db louder with the trunk open, but I have a forward firing bandpass blowthrough. It doesn't surprise me that with port forward you are louder with the trunk open, but just think how much louder it would be if you could actually hear those back two subs. Lol.

I would try subs to the sides and port back unless you want to seal the trunk.

Wouldn't the subs on the side cause as much cancellation as it would be subs on top?

phase interference is a *****, eh?

moving the subs to the sides of the box won't change anything. it's a matter of the distance between your rear subs and the port, and the front of the car. creating a coherent wave is tricky, and in your case isn't possible without reducing the # of subs.

just remove the rear seat, put them in a row, and enjoy.

worked in 1997, it should still work today
