Building my first box

I have just figured asking some questions wouldn't hurt either.

i no use foil. i lay 2 layers of tape. 1 layer one way, 2nd layer perpendicular.

then give it a good coat of wax. it'll let the glass release when done. the first glass layer i 'paint' the tape w/ the resin. (some resin on the bottom will help hold the matt in place) lay my matt on top then stiple(ibelive is the word) i try to lay all my layers at one time,

Ok so I was lazy today, I only cut out the circles for my subs, glued it and screwed it together... But I took pictures

Im thinking Im gonna need to caulk the shit out of it tomorrow but either way im fiberglassing the bottom so I can just come up the sides to make it truly sealed. Also I left the middle open because I can either make that storage or put my amp there. Im really liking it so far, too bad I don't have an amp or headunit to power it up with to hear it lol...

Also whats stiple mean? And where do you get wax?

stiple=dip brush in resin. and "dab" brush not "paint" you need to dab the resin into the entire piece of matt. example of what it shouldn't look like. in this pic you can see a couple of pieces that you can still make out the shape of the piece of matt. you shouldn't see that, the peices should more or less blend as one. stipling is 2 fold though. you also do it to press out air bubbles, and excess resin. 2 much IS a bad thing...

*my excuse, i ran out of resin, so i got it the best i could w/o mixing up more.

Mmm Im gonna have fun tomorrow... Also why do you use wax rather then alluminum foil?

Some of my cuts were not exactly perfect though, lol... if you look at the 4th and 5th pics they didnt turn out to great lol...

Also on the flush mount stuff I really wanted to do it but my dad insisted that I couldnt because the wood woul be too weak at those points... so that circle is for just the bottom... I was thinking if I put a ring around the outside on top of that front panel and maybe fiber glassed it, that would look semi decent. What do you think?

isn't that what you were talking about the first time? i was...

i've never had any luck w/ the foil staying in one spot. you can tape it down, but that kinda defeats the purpose.

I bought 12 bucks worth of painters tape I dont want it to go to waste. But I Imagine if I lay out the foil and put the box on top the weight of the box would hold it down fairly well..

or do it something like this. the red is a piece of wood glued to the backside. only don't cut an oval, cut out the size of the sub in the front piece of wood...

Oh and what I was gonna do was cut a circle that is as big as the blue circle on one of those pics up there. And then cut one that had the same size opening as the whole I actually cut then glue it in the inside of the box. If that makes sense, but my dad said that there wouldnt be enough support on the front piece because there would be less then an inch of wood on top and bottom at those points.

When I put the box under my seat the front edges graise my handles that lift the seat so I really dont have room for a whole other layer of MDF on the front only a small portion...

yeah thats wht i did on my first box, also my first flushmount

i said hey.. i have enough wood left.. lets try it

and it worked out nicely

if your dad said there wasnt enough overlap... make a bigger overlap, problen solved

my overlap was about 3 inches with srews at 1.5 inches

put it on the inside. if you put a whole nother piece on the inside, it don't matter theres only an inch on top and bottom, cause there is a whole 2nd piece in there. get what i'm saying?

Yah its just gonna be difficult cutting it out after I get it in there Ill consider my options though I ll see if I can squeeze another piece on front, I got enough wood where its not a big deal.

know what would be easier...cut it BEFORE you put it in. slide it in, mark your hole, slide it out, cut it, slide it in, glue it done. and you've still got the outside where you want it.

well I gotta cut the larger hole from the front piece which is already glued and screwed in. I dunno it will all work out in the end I believe in my box lol...

The second concern is that the top wont lay completely flat... if that happens I may be completely ****ed. But I guess thats where caulk and left over fiber glass comes into play...
