Box Design!

Replaced the Type X 12 in 3cubes tuned to 30hz with 2 Kaption SPL 12's...

Need to build myself a good box! Gonna do the typical slot port back/subs back design, but subwoofertools is down and can't seem to find anything of the sort!!! I am not so great with the math and formulas otherwise I'd attempt it...

Anyway, I'm wondering since the sub's Fs is 37hz, should my box be tuned to ~37hz?? Going lower won't be too great I'm assuming? I've been out of the car audio thing for a while til I picked up this X and MRD M1005 a week or so ago. (Thankfully subwoofertools was around when I built my box for it, which was last summer?)

Dimensions are; 14" tall, 33" wide (length/across or w/e), and about 20-23ish" deep.

Looking for about 3-4 cubes, will this be sufficient for these two 12's? Mainly worried about the whole Fs and tuning fq. thing...

*EDIT* Read post #4 for max dimensions, re-measured a few things!!!! 33" Long, 22" Deep, 17" Tall!

Can someone please help me out?

I got a sheet of MDF today, and have just tomorrow to build something until my next days off! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Just taking a quick look into it...it looks like you don't have enough airspace to make an optimal enclosure..//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Well, i'll rephrase that. If youre going to use a port of any decent size it will take up too much space..you'll come to like 2.8 cubes or so.

EDIT AGAIN:

When i used 23 for the depth that opened up some extra space..

On RE's calculator type this in:

-33width

-14height

-23depth (both top and bottom depths)

-.75 material thickness

-5" wide port

-12 long 2nd port segment

That should get you to 3.53cubes, 62.5 sq inches of port area, tuned to 33Hz...still small, but that's about as good as it can get unless you can open up some more room

***EDIT*** Took some more measurements, and even with the box tilted downwards (the front) I can get 33" long, 22" deep, and 17" tall! Max.

Well see I would have more room but my problem lies in the design of my car! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

The hatch window comes downwards, and at the bottom is the little housing for the rear wiper, as it is, the current box sits like right against it unless I move the box physically backwards a bit. So I can't get much more height out of it. And then lies the real problem, between the rear shock towers, where the wheel well is, there is like a hump that goes from wheel well to wheel well. Which will "tilt" the the front of the box downwards, it'd retarded as hell. Hard to explain, I have pictures of my old setup, 33" wide, 14" tall, and 19" deep. 3cubes tuned to 30hz.

IGNORE THE MESS AND GHETTO LOOKING SETUP! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Buuut, maybe if I keep the height the same (14") it might work a little better?? We tried a different box for 3 10's, and it was higher and that's where I really discovered the problems I described above...

Also, I'm reeeeally wondering about tuned fq. due to the Fs of the subs. Seeing as the Fs is 37, shouldn't it be tuned to that? Otherwise I hear I'm going to run into problems with lower tuning????? Clarification?

Subs will be inverted and save a good >1 cube. I understand its not optimal,, that's why I'm trying to get it as good as i can. I have plenty of room for port area, especially if I port on the sides. I'd like to port right in the middle to add bracing though for the height of the box and ~10" wide. Is 2 up, 2 forward, and port forward a good option?

Right under 4 cubes each minus port displacement. I'd lose a ton sealed :S

Wrong thread mane... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif:laugh:

*EDIT* So with new dimensions in the RE box calculator, 33x22x17. I end up with this:

Any suggestions??? I'm STILL wondering about the Fs of the sub and tuning, can someone elaborate on this PLEASE!? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
