Ported box design

I’m looking to build a ported box for my car. Also looking to maximize usable trunk space. Manufacturer has a box recommendation size with measurements and what not. Can I adjust it to make it wider and more narrow to take up less trunk space? Will it affect the overall sound as long as the box is still technically within spec? Was playing around with subbox.pro to get as much info as possible. Thanks in advance.

Generally the most important thing is just to have the airspace. I don't design anymore but you can check out my page on IG and see all the designs I have and how funky some of them are. Absolutely you can run into internal airflow problems, where like if a part of your box is too skinny it can absolutely mess sound up. But, as long as the box basically isn't too skinny or too restricted at a certain part, just getting the airspace correct is fine. Now, port and sub orientation matter too, sometimes very greatly. A lot of trunks work with firing the sub and port rear if you have a port. Just don't make the box so big it keeps air from flowing around the box into the cabin. That can happen.

I used to have a nice thread with these pics in it on this site but this site doesn't protect talent or anything or long term audio people so a bunch of malicious people ruined my threads, that why I'm sharing this IG link FYI.

I made mine a little larger than the recommended, and it sounds good to me. I also used a slanted, irregular shape, so I could fit it in my trunk. The specs for the sealed sub call for 1.25 cu ft for each, and my box is 1.56 cu ft. for each. The ported requirement was 1.5 cu ft. You should be okay with a slightly larger box.
