How many watts over the RMS wattage rating on a speaker can you go without blowing the speaker?

depends on the speaker. some speakers can't even take rated power.

I'm talking about Polk Audio DB series 6.5's and 6x9's. There rated for 100 watts RMS and the amp i was thinking about getting puts out 104 watts RMS per channel.

i had a set of the polk DB 5.25's in a car a while ago and they wouldn't take very much power w/o gettin stinky. i don't remember mine being rated for 100 watts though, i think they were around 50-60watts.

yes, very true. very rarely are speakers blown from being slightly over powered.

my RE 10" is rated 175 and i have been powering it off 400 watts for a year

all about gain
