Amp fried yet again...

So since my last amp (Soundstream LW1.1700d) went up in flames due to bad electrical, I went out and bought a new battery (Optima Yellow Top group D35) and did the Big 3 in 0 gauge, even built my first ported box for my two 12 inch Type R's!

I was forced to exchange the Soundstream for a Planet Audio BB1400 mono, I thought I would be fine and dandy with my newly upgraded electrical system, but today while driving down the highway listening to my music full tilt, the subs cut out. I immediately assume that the amp was fucked and I confirmed this once I got home by checking the speaker terminals with a DMM, no reading. The blue light on the amp lights up but the green power light does not.

I don't know if I am just pushing these amps way too hard because of my addiction to louder bass or if I am setting the gains/filters wrong.

Or perhaps some of my setting on my headunit are set wrong? The headunit is a JVC KD-G340 I got off some random guy on craigslist. It makes my music skip when playing through CD's and not a ton of options for EQ.

I'll admit I set my gains to put out about 1300/1400 watts available from the amp at 40/50 volume on the deck. I have been pushing the volume to 42/50 since I hooked it up, maybe this could be my problem? I wouldn't think that upping the volume by two would cause my amp to fry but maybe it did... Also at times have been turning on the Hip Hop EQ which adds 2DB according to the JVC manual.

Anyways... I just want to know how to avoid destroying another amp this time, what actions should I completely avoid if I don't want another broken amplifier, what brands to go with if I decide to upgrade amplifiers, and also what my head unit settings should look like. This is the third amp i've blown in the last 4 months.

Just considering selling my Type R's + amp (once I get it refurbished under warranty) and box all at once on CL and going with a completely new setup. Maybe a beefy 15 inch in a big box.. if I can fit it in my trunk //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Sorry for rambling on, just wanted let you car audio pros out there know about all of my failures so you can help me avoid mishaps like this in the future. THANKS

BTW my budget for a future setup budget would be around 500-700 dollars depending on how much I could sell the Type R's for and the amp.

It sounded so great though. Clean and LOUD (At least to me), especially with the new 4 cuft box.
But you're probably right, maybe I am just expecting way too much from my Type R's haha.
as far as getting an new amp i would get an mb quart 1500.1d there on a website somewhere for 165 shipped (quick google search) i just put one on my brothers two type rs at 1 ohm, and for the price i think its unbeatable. 1

Agreed..There is a thread in the forum about setting gains ,ect.I myself have only scimmed through, but may help you on the next amp sett up??Those type R are pretty good subs, and sound good Id try a different/ a little more Power before getting new sub/subs.Sounds like you just need a better/more powerful amplifier, that will run cooler at the ohms you are at.Pref one with a built in fan/ or add a fan, and raise the amp off of the flat surface as well, and get some air circulation. What ohms you running @? The amplifier stable @?

I agree with getting a higher quality amplifier, but as far as the more powerful amplifier goes.. I doubt a 47ah battery + big three and 110 amp stock alternator will be enough for 2k+ watt amp. I had the Type R's wired to 1 ohm, wired to a 1 ohm stable monoblock amp. The amp was just laying on top of the box due to not having enough room to secure the amp to the top. I actually just got lazy with it, but if it is necessary to avoid this happening again.. I guess I will have to find a good method to secure it to the box.

40/50 aint bad... If you're playing your HU on hip-hop mode or whatever, I hope you have it set to that when you're setting your gains too. Honestly, you've got some major issues though if you keep frying amps like this, especially with some beefed up electrical. How are you setting your gains? Do you know how good/clean your ground is? What wiring do you have to the amp?

And you don't need to have a more powerful amp, though I'm sure your car could easily handle 1800-2k. But maybe just a better quality amp. Before that though, we gotta figure out how you keep frying them.

And secure your amp man, it's not that hard to screw it to a board or even to the box.

I will try to take a high quality picture of the amp ground tomorrow when it's light out, but the ground and power wire are both 4 gauge and the ground wire is attached to a small bolt that is attached to the chassis near the opening of my trunk. Paint is sanded off pretty well, might have missed a couple of spots.. As far as my gains go , I set it to put out 36-37HZ at 40/50 volume on the USER EQ, which is the default eq for the head unit. I just switched to the Hip Hop EQ for a song or two when I wanted to really rattle my car.

EDIT: Used a 50HZ test tone I converted off youtube and burned onto a CD. I realize now that this may be part of the reason why my amp was getting a clipped signal.
