Alternative to JL Thin Line

If you read the old thread on ICIX, it is really quite funny.

TangBand (an OEM) stole eD's design. However, eD's product is better. This is according to eD, anyways. So which is it?

The reality is probably that eD had TB do the initial engineering and prototypes, then went to a cheaper buildhouse for production. For some companies, this is a routine practice.

I was reading some of the old posts again.

The product was first available in November of 2006. According to Ben, the design was first started in July of 2005 (and an ICIX member known as NotACop had a prototype in his hands a year before it was released). And yet, somehow, the cone is still patent pending? And they still haven't provided a patent number? And I still haven't been able to find one? It's been 3 years...per standard patent timelines, it should be publicly available by now, and yet it is nowhere to be found....

Patents can take quite awhile, 4 years or more even.

I'm not questioning the patent approval timeline, per se, but I am wondering aloud about the use of the "Patent Pending" title. From the first disclosure of whatever you are patenting, you have just 30 months before the application becomes public. My point is that, based on the dates provided by Ben and co., the patent should be findable at this point. With real credibility, their site would show the patent application number right beside the words "Patent Pending". I sent them an email a while ago to their tech address asking for more information on their patent application but did not receive a response.

I never said I was equating performance to looks, but someone mentioned how the thin mounts all looked cheap compared to normal depth woofers so I was just commenting on how they look.
Oh we all know that. We understand you are certainly content with commenting on how they look, and basing their performance off of that, the owner's opinions, as well as price.

Well, the 2 aren't identical, and doesn't Tang Band do OEM design work so it may just be that Ben Milne had them design or manufacture it for him.
Dense.

Well, there is the possibility that he is lying, but I would have to think if he was he could get into quite a lot of trouble.

Just curious as to how that second statement there could be dense.

So here are the companies that have shallow mounts that I know of
Memphis

MTX

JL Audio

Earthquake

Soundstream

Stereo Integrity

Sony

Elemental Designs

Any more? And who here as actually heard on of these?

fosgate

kicker

pioneer

tang band

you know i used to install for a jl dealer. went by to check out these slimlines to audition them for my hhr. i liked them, their sound was on par with a W3 and the pair did excellent off of a 500/1. i would dare to say they had excellent SQ on par with my D6/9 and output level was far better than any kicker, rf, pioneer, memphis, and ed slimline.

maybe i can venture to say they are as clean as my old IDQ 12's and had much better output considering the power they were recieving. above all i was impressed and since i still get my accomodations hookup price they may be in my collection sooner or later.

NO NO NO NO NO. that driver is NOT out, you cannot possibly recommend it. you havent heard it. To the op, The jl really is a nice driver. the idiots above me (and im sure all the other 9million recommendations for the "bm" are nothing more than si sackriding. these guys have NOT heard them, and have no idea as to the sound. take it with a grain of salt.
Actually this guy's obsession with *****ing about SI is even more tiresome than SI sackriding. You can listen to him for entertainment purposes if you like, but beyond that you should probably just scroll through his posts. That's what everyone else does.

Yet he nuthugs Mach 5 which uses an extremely cheap Chinese buildhouse for their products.
