A question for papermaker

They might just be specialist one one type of machine making the same part everyday and that's whats needed from them compared to a Machinist that's trained on multiple pieces of equipment and can make anything. Being union doesn't mean your making more then other people doing the same job it's thier to make sure your not being taken advantage of and working for a fare wage.
Disagree with that last statement. taking advantage of thats BS.. It's rather the other way around....those Boeing "machinists" taking advantage of the huge aerospace company, make a lot of $$ then go on strike because their stuardunion told them so because they "shouldn't" have to pay say 50 bucks/month for medical/dental insurance. They have no idea how much they got it made over there, and yet there still not happy. I'd like to see them at another shop, where getting paid far less than what they were getting, and paying a hell of a lot more for medical. For instance, the deduction for me is 2600 bucks until insurance kicks in...beyond ridiculous. A lot of those machinists are limited on what they can do/machines to run. A true machinist, should know the aspects of many machines/machinery. That's the guy that deserves Boeing wages.

Not really but a work day is 7-3:30 you can tell them if you can't work weekend or nights night work is a higher pay weekends are overtime so your on a set schedule and if a job is over night you'll know before hand not just sprung on you one day. The union does have a supplemental program they will give you some money to offset the difference but it's not = to 2 days work.
That's a risk. Not really guaranteed.

Like I said most of the smaller company's that have quick turn around jobs request apprentices because thier lower pay and usually younger and don't mind a day off here and thier and are still learning and thier willing to work with them threw lesrning.

I edited my post I don't know if you seen this part

Most jobs are a year to up to 10 year projects so you will know months in advance when the lay off is gonna be. The smaller week to month jobs are usually for the apprentices that are lower skill and on a easy peace of equipment like a dirt roller and end dump. I have been on the same job for 2 years now and the only layoffs were from dec. The Friday before Christmas till Jan 2nd the company take a holiday break but I have been with this company for 5 years and usually the next job is lined up or we have multiple jobs going at one time so if your good and mesh well with everyone u won't get laid off just sent to the next job.

Boeing can always bring in non union employees during a strike, a company around here did that during a strike but settled after a 2 weeks when thier production went way down compared to the people that do the task every day.

That's more like it...I can deal with a job that's been bidded 8 years to complete. That's a guarantee you have work unless the person really fVcks up bad.

Don't like big jobs. Those big jobs always ****. It's always a deadline regardless and people die all the time.

True....then comes to training those people. I cannot speak for other job unions across the US, in other states. However here, it's a complete joke. Politics have to be thrown in the "talks" if they want Boeing to stay here AND given millions in tax breaks. That would mean if Boeing moved to another state, cheaper wages and no tax breaks along with 100's of 1000's of ex Boeing employee's out of work. Don't move to WA anytime soon...nothing to do here and rains a lot along with lovely cold weather.

With OSHA and everyone being lawsuit happy safety is the largest part of a job now. You can get thrown off for the dumbest safety violation like taking your safety glasses off when you go take a **** and forgetting to put them back on before u walk out the port a potty

Yea politics and money always have a way of making something easy fucked up. One way to think about it is Boeing a huge corporate company if they weren't getting a return on thier money the union would be gone in a heart beat they don't care about protests or news backlash. Thier always has to be a balance the auto unions got to big and had to much power and look at Detroit most of the cars and parts are made over seas now because it wasn't profitable for them to make it with how out of hand the union costs got and thousands are out of Jobs and moved away leaving the city and surround areas in shambles. Then you read about horrible work conditions at Tesla and people wanting to unionize because of it.

Unions use propaganda to paint these pictures of corporations as big evil empires out to squash the little guy. Yeah there are some bad companies out there but there are some really good ones too. Unions want you to believe that companies making a profit are somehow a bad thing. The only people who benefit from unions are the members themselves.

I had a labor issue a few weeks ago with the laborers union and the labor Stewart. I have to constantly check their PLA contract because they will claim things that aren’t even in their contract. Often I find that they don’t even know their own rules. I read their contract two weeks ago and almost vomited over what is in there. I cannot believe that my company even signs these things!

In dealing with both union and non-union companies I have found that the union companies are not always better. I have had some very good experiences with both union and non-union subcontractors. We have a union waterproofing company right now that is an A+ company and their workers are skilled and professional. We have a non union plumbing sub that is also this way and we have a union concrete company that totally ***** especially in safety.

You lay off people you don't need and you hire where you do. What part of the equation is escaping you?
Why not give those about to lose their jobs a choice of transffering to another dept within the company rather than getting rid of them?? But.....they could careless....as long as Jeff Bezos is making his billions.
