So when a sub is on...and playing, sounding great...then you try and turn up the sub output on your head unit...it sounds good till you start getting higher up....and it starts making that durr....durr noise when it hits hard...what is that...With the power your giving a subwoofer, and its playing...with more wattage what does that do...and also if you add the wattage, what does it affect, i understand it makes it louder...and hit harder...well thats if the sub can take it but presumably if you do give it more power is it likely to make the noise or is it going to get deeper and not affect it, my sub can take a clean 2500 watts easily and i have every intention of giving it to him //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif but what im worried about is the durr noise it only happens at certain levels and you know what it sounds like everyone does...whats it saying my headunit is crapping out my amp is crapping out and needs more power or what? just a couple questions for all you knowledgeable people out there...i would really apprecaite it because i know my sub has the potential easily...most definetly...i just want to sound good in the process, because my seats are down and when im not trying to overpower it/ do what ever im doing to it...it sounds amazing..can someone anyone help this is Aka Noob/ A little Fyi because i knwo everyone has asked this question at one point in time....

i wouldnt think it is bottoming out because i think most hi end companies make their subs now with enough rearward clearance now that the sub reaches its suspension limitations before it slams the coil.

if you have the bass boost, or EQ as MTX calls it, turned up, you might try backing it down a little. it can cause some odds noises at high volume from my experience. if that doesn't fix it, back the gains off. its either a mechanical noise from the woofer, or the woofer itself playing a highly clipped signal, which either or both of the fixes list above should cure

just a side note, what kinda HU are you running, and at what volume does the sub start making these noises? any info you can give, including the material being played will help us troubleshoot your problem.

or, you could just come down to Morgantown, providing its alright with Scottie, and i'll help you sort the problem out at his shop //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

But sadly enough im using a sony head unit its a nice little headunit thou its a fx7700 decent one has the lcd display and the videos 7 built in crossovers. Bass, treble, sub, left right and all that good stuff..but yes, it goes from -10 to +10, i usually keep my sub on friggin -8 and it WANGS it gets ungodly loud at like 4 but then it starts to make that durr noise.....i did have the settings for bass on like positive 6 but i was told just turn it off period...that sound ok?, it doesnt really poop out on me with it off but i just did it to....Next i have the treble i have that all the way up no problems...

Gain on the amp

doug said have that 2/3's of the way up....cause of my headunit...but im going to tune it by ear tonight...im getting a consistent 14 volts going to my amp which is rediculous but i have a volt meter hooked up to my amp now and its beautiful...cant wait to try and get more power i want to get that steady stream of power going so that my sub will get louder because it has the potential...will the big 3 give me more voltage or no....

back to everything else, the eq i made the mistake of having that at like half...im going to go turn that off the frequency is like at 1/4th maybe a little higher....ill check everything but yeah.....im going to do what i can to boost the S/q and the performance over all....

you have revealed the problem IMO. when you turn the sub level up, you are increasing the RCA voltage to the amp. the gain is simply to high for the deck settings. set the HU sub level to maximum, and adjust the gain to it instead, as i outlined in my other post.
