Would it be alright to use a 12" PR with a 12" subwoofer, i know it is usually recommended to go with the next size up but this isnt really possible in my appication. Also Should Xmax be as high as the subwoofer or higher/ would i be able to compensate this way?

Generally speaking, you want the PRs to be capable of displacing twice as much as the active driver. So, if you have a 12" woofer with 12mm of xmax, you'd want a single 12" passive with 24mm of xsus.

I don't know any links off the top of my head, but basically, a PR displaces air and serves the function of a port in an enclosure - to reinforce the front wave of the driver. As Warbleed mentioned earlier, you want a PR that has around double the displacement capability of your main driver.
