96 honda accord over heating on idle

It's the water pump. The impeller in on the pump is most likely chewed up, or even a couple fins broken.
I dought its the water pump. Did you read the part were he says when he revs up his engine it cools down doesnt over heat. If the pump's impellers are chewed up there is nothin to spin faster when he rev's the engine.. I have seen alot of water pumps on fords go bad like that though and the over heat no matter what you do. Idle or higher rpms.

If he revs his enigne up and it cools down I cant see it being a flow issue. If the water pump is bad its not going to do anything.
? with car running is there any noises to be heard. Like listen in on that water pump is it making any noise like its broken apart interanlly.

Im saying he has air pockets. Or this is all normal and hes over killing it. Being his fans come on and temp goes down. One thing let that baby go and see how high the temp goes. Get a t stat gauge and put it up close to the thermostat housing and see what the temp reads there. To compare it to the reading on the dash. How hot is it in your area right now too?
I didn't really hear any strange sounds. It all sounded normal to me. I've tried letting it go when it started over heating.. it just keeps going up and wont stop most of the time. The fans do turn on when it heats up and helps a little, but it still doesn't prevent it fully from over heating. But let me say this, it doesn't over heat much, maybe like once or twice a week.. mostly on idle.

It's temperature around here has been in the mid 80's.

Also, Im going to try flusging out the radiator when I get the chance.

thanks for all the help so far //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

umm yes,if the finns are just partially wore out reving will spin whats left of them faster and in turn work better.ive seen this too many times //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I dought it in this case. Im pretty sure( dont hold me to it) his water pump has metal fins. Havent seen them wear half way. If it was a ford mabye yeah plastic fins.

I will get back to you tomorrow had a busy day at work. Will check alldata and another site called identifix and see what they say. being I am not with you and its always hard to tell whats really going on.

I had almost this exact problem with my car ('96 Lumina). The problem with mine was the gaskets and hoses were nearly rotted out from very little use over the course of a few years before I had it.

When I'd look for parking, temp would almost read max on the gauge. Turned on the AC and it cooled it down a little, rev'ed the engine, cooled it down a lot. Freeway driving was ok. I had the radiator rotted out and a new thermostat put it, but it didn't help.

Sound about right?

Coolant was leaking through the tiny cracks and reving the engine forced an adequate amount of coolant past the cracks. Send it to a mechanic NOW. My problem could have ended up as a cracked block.

that sounds like mine, but mine doesnt seems to overheat as bad as your car did.

I also dont see any leaks.

So it can end up as bad as that witha cracked block? Thanks for telling me, Ill get it checked out. thanks again

I've seen Honda's do this.. It's the tell-tale symptom of a bad water pump. At idle, there isn't enough surface are on the impeller to move the water, when it's revved up, the pump circulates the coolant and it cools down.

And the motor is a F22

That is the case for all cars with a failing water pump, no matter the make or model.
