1996 Ford Explorer

I'm working on a friends 1996 ford explorer - I installed a head unit (Pioneer MP3/WMA player) into the Explorer. It use to have a premuim sound system with what I assume is an AMP and mayby a sub. I was wondering if anybody knows the best way to use the stock speakers and bypass the stock amp - The head unit has too much output - 50+watts/ch for me to hook into the existing stock amp. I would also appreciate any info you have on wiring diagrams for bypassing the amp.

I have a '97 with the JBL premium system. The speakers run from the amp in the passenger-side rear quarterpanel. To bypass the amp, you have to run a wiring harness to that location and detach the other end currently plugged into the amp. I had to run the same harness even though I didn't use the stock speaker wire because that also powers the power antenna. You will need a torx wrench to get the seatbelt bolt off to remove the rear quarterpanel. That will make your install much easier. I would just recommend getting that bolt put back in to specification so you don't compromise safety.
