Hi, I recently purchased a 02 Jetta tdi with a monsoon system and I love it but I've always wanted to do subs in a vehicle so I decided to do it in this vehicle. But then i realized i don't have a freaking clue to what to get. I am looking to get something that will work well with the stock speaker setup. The car came with some older Kenwood KDC-138 and it isn't bad for right now but I think I am going to want to replace it. So if someone could suggest a sub, amp, wiring setup and maybe even a deck to go with it that would be great. I'm looking to spend less then 500$ all together but I'm not sure how realistic that is. I'd prob be willing to go to 700-800$ if it was worth my dime with a deck too.

Thoughts: was thinking like two 10's for the trunk and a decent size amp.

This one is pretty spiffy, Its worked well for me. I have an 03 Jetta.

I also highly suggest replacing the door speakers before you start getting into any sort of substage. Also, what kind of sound are you looking for in the subs? something extremely loud? or something that is more sound quality based?

Also, pay no attention to the retail price of that HU, you can probably find it for cheaper on amazon or something.

It's honestly hard to suggest equipment as most everyone will be biased. Best thing to do is read read read up on products and try and base your decision on that or try listening to a few subs already installed. it if you want the quick easy way out let someone do it for you, but that's just boring imo.

That's a nice head-unit, I am ok with biased, just want to hear it from a few different people. I want something with some sound quality but I'm mostly just interested in subs for a little more bass so I can show off a little. Nothing out in left field or the fancy as can be. if anything a real simple setup.

When i think of simple set-up I think of small subs with minimal space, so maybe a couple 8's in a sealed enclosure would do. I've tried an ID8 v.3 in both sealed and ported and i must say it sounds good in both, with ported being louder. I would reccomend all 8's I've tried, DD 1508, Ascendant audio assassin 8, sundown e8 v.1, sa8, Id8. As far as amp, anything in the 500-1000watt rms from, sundown, jl audio, audioque, alpine, us amps. ONly ones i have experience with and all worked well for me. Also a JL audio 12w6v2 will work wonders in a ported enclosure with little power(say 400).

Ok you lost me a little, I am very inexperienced as very as car audio goes, what is 12w6v2, sounds like 12watt by 6 volts 2 something? sorry Only experience I have is putting in head units of which I've done like 4. The brands sound relatively familiar. I would prefer 10's and something that I could see if i decided to show off my subs, so could you altar your suggestions a little? Thanks for your help

yo Shank i have an 01 jetta with the monsoon and i just replaced the Head Unit with this one JVC KD-R620 CD receiver at Crutchfield.com and since its from crutchfield, just select ur car and all the installation equipment needed will be included for free and it ships free so for $130 you can't beat it. Also it was super easy to install, believe me, i'm prolly worse off than you as far as knowledge of this stuff.
Thanks keep'em coming. Really looking for more suggestions on a good set of 10" subs and an amp to go with it.

I'm not really all about kenwoods, Look at those SSA's I posted. & this amp.
Audio Savings | VISONIK V218XT 600 WATT RMS 2 CHANNEL CAR AMPLIFIER AMP

DO NOT get ANY visonik product! Their products are straight garbage!!

Kenwood stuff is not good either, only their headunits are.

Like someone posted earlier- go with 2 SSA Dcon 10s, they are 120 each, figure 100 for a nice custom ported box and then this amp: Crunch PZA1500.1 (PZA15001) 1500W, 1-Channel Power Zone Amplifier

Your total will be less than $500 and you'll have a very nice sounding subs that will get decently loud while coming in under $500. For the money, you wont get a louder or better sounding speaker for the price of the dcon.
