3” mid locations effect on stage

What are the compromises of these various positions for 3” mids?
Mine are currently in the upper door (C), but I just moved my tweeters from windshield firing to on axis and it’s so much crisper with better stage depth.
I’ve read that on axis for mids (3”) don’t matter so much and it’s more important to keep them closer to the woofers (6.5”).
I’m wondering what the gains and compromises are for a 3” mid in general for the various positions given.


A-the dash corners (windshield firing)

B- on axis from the A pillars (where tweeters will be soon too).

C- leave them in the upper doors

I mean putting them on axis will help with beaming and give you more definition just like with the tweeters but I don't think I would make major mods for little gain. I might cut out the plastics grill in front of it in favor of some grill cloth. And seal the speaker face to the door car with foam
 
Depends. Everything is a compromise. Generally we're adding a 3 inch to create height and eliminate rainbowing in the front stage. We also want to create depth too. So you're best locations will A or B and C is a distant 3rd place although C looks like it would be the easiest for installing. On-axis is better than off-axis, although with a 3 inch it shouldn't matter that much because most tweeters cross low enough to eliminate beaming problems.

You can test the 3 inch in the dash locations by bunching up a towel behind the 3 driver to absorb the back wave. That will give you an idea if you like those locations better and if it's worth the time and effort to build dash pods.
 
OK, Im going to speak purely from experience here. I just got my 3 way front stage installed about 6ish months ago and went through 6 different locations before I settled on my final one.

Ignore the doors for the moment, they look completely different now.

Depending on your crossover point on or off-axis will not make a huge difference, but location is a big deal. You want to go with position A if at all possible. The further away from you and the further from each other your midrange are the better. If you are like me you will be playing 300hz to about 5k through your midrange. That means they are your primary point source for vocals, melody, and most of the meat of your instruments. By having the speakers in the corners of your dash it will be alot eaiser to get a nice wide Soundstage and with tuning you can have a proper left-right balance.

I went on-axis originally, but when I finalize the pods I will be doing a slightly off-axis approach. The midrange and tweeter will all be aimed at the center top of the rear window more or less. There is alot of math involved, but in order to get the same amount of on and off axis information from both left and right aiming for the "center" of the rear of the car is a good point to pick.

I think B for tweeters and B for 3" mids. As mentioned before it will help with beaming, clarity but also, you can reduce power as they are aimed right at you and still get incredible volume. Reduced power can = less distortion.

On axis the drivers(speakers) are facing you like you would have in a home system. Off axis Would be side firing or in a specific amount of degrees away from you. That why when you look at a drivers frequency response graph you see 3 or different plots. It shows how the drivers play in freq. and intensity (DBSpl) Here is an example of my AMT pro's.

What did you do in your Bugs for mids and highs? How were they "imaged" (placed) [mounted]?

The black Bug had 6-¾" Pioneer pro's in the rear, 6-½" American Bass Midbass with a 3-½" Pioneer pro tweeter in the doors (4 way setup). The green Bug had 6-½" Audio Legion coaxials in homemade kick panels and in the rear quarter panels.
