Has anyone tested dynamat versus the competition?

Hello, I'll keep this post simple.

Despite trying to research this on my own I still have no idea what the differences are between cheap and expensive brands of butyl style sound deadening. All that i've read so far is marketing hearsay about dynamat being either way better or just as effective as cheaper brands like noico and kilmat. All of these reviews seem to focus on meaningless stuff like ease of install and brand recognition.

Has anyone/company actually taken the time to lay down a cheaper brands sound deadening, test the outside decibel levels and stereo frequency response, then rip out the cheaper stuff and replace it with dynamat (expensive stuff) and compared the hard data?

I definitely care more about decibels and frequency response than heat insulation or ease of install. I want to ensure I install deadening that will serve me well when I begin upgrading my cars sound system. I am I bit of an enthusiast about stuff like this but i'd rather avoid paying 5 times more for deadening if it really has no benefit for my use case.

If anyone has information or experimental data please provide it, thank you ahead of time. I want to do this job right.

Chris Purdue did a huge test on them years ago. Couldn't find the link to his testing though. He has been working on doing an updated 2020 test. He still recommends Dynamat Xtreme.

Here's his old testing

His new testing should have started a while ago, but he keeps having set backs. Enough so that I'm considering doing my own testing. That said, he was recommending dynamat extreme right after SDS went out of business. But, has recently started recommending ResoNix, which is also what prompted him to want to do a new test.

As far as my own test, I recently purchased some high quality contact microphones and amp going to be installing them on the rear doors of my competition car (which currently has no speakers and no deadening on them) and use said rear door to test different CLD's. Should be interesting.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll read up on this stuff. If you guys have more generalized information you can also provide the more the better. I need to replace the recycled cotton flooring material in my car as its collected water and mold. Any info regarding sound blankets, mass loaded vinyl, ect. would be great.

Also is it known why dynamat is so much more expensive? Is there something more expensive about the manufacturing process or the material cost?

Try this link. The more information you have, the better, https://soundproofcentral.com/fatmat-second-skin-gtmat/

@SkizeR One question regarding what you've written about 25%-35% coverage being budget optimal. When applying cld to the roof of a vehicle would you say 100% coverage is still important for those interested in heat insulation? Not that I actually know how effective cld is for thermal insulation. Perhaps I should be looking at something else for heat.

Also how would you rate the performance of your cld rectangles compared to the squares? Any chance you could add some tests for it to your website? I was planning on either getting 72 square feet of dynamat or the 80 square feet of your rectangles.

The 25-35% coverage is for CLD that is GOOD. otherwise, you're not doing much. There honestly arent many CLD products on the market that are that good. As far as rectangles vs squares, the rectangles are being discontinued. There is no point to them when we have the Squares. The Squares are good enough that they are better per dollar spent, so I figured i'd make it easier for everyone by just doing away with the rectangles.

I use these and they work great. I splice them right before the LOC. One leg on the negative the other on the positive.
