Not necessarily. You can also play around with the port LENGTH as well. Since most walls don't have any port length (besides the baffle), you aren't going to see a huge difference in port tuning with the decreasing port size.

in some applications there is just the baffle and really no port other then however thick the baffle is, essentially a wall with a rectangular hole in it.....

I see. I have noticed on several of the walls I have seen in pics, several, several "layers" of mdf are used for the front baffle. I thought this was more to "secure" the box rather than act like a port.
