wtf crossover?

So I was driving home and POP. Smoke starts coming from under my seat where my crossover is positioned. The only thing is they aren't even wired to my speakers yet and the amp gain was ALL the way down. It only has the wires ran from the amp to it. How does a crossover blow without any power through it?

There is still a completed circuit on the shunt filters with no speakers attached.
