I don't think either company makes "shitty" products. I do think it takes more to keep a GM, Ford, etc up as long as the foreign cars.

Barring lemons, and other problems, if a GM and Honda was taken care of in the same capacity, I feel they would last about equally as long.

If you drive them both hard, rarely change the oil, adjust suspension, etc then I readily admit the foreign cars got us beat.

However, if a foreign part does happen to fail, most of the time it is cheaper to replace and Ameican car part rather than a foriegn car part.

Enough with this anecdotal evidence about your grandfathers.

before i bought my car (focus zx3) I test drove a Honda (fit and civic), Toyota (yaris and corolla) and a Nissan (sentra) before buying and still choose to buy American.

I never seriously considered the sedans, but IMO the fofo is a much better hatchback than either the fit or the yaris. My biggest concern was the resale value and consequently an upside down loan, but i figured if i was happy enough with it -it didn't really matter because i wouldn't be looking to trade it in after a year.

26K on the odometer and a year later i am satisfied with my choice.

My '97 Chevy Z71 is at 220k miles and still runs great other then a few things that need to be replaced because the previous owner didn't know a **** thing about mechanics or 4wd vehicles.

A friend of mine has a '96 Z71.

Still runs good, 4wd still operates correctly, the only real issue with the truck is needing the A/C compressor replaced.

It has 297K+ on the original 350ci w/ OD Auto.

Not a bad truck at all. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

seems like a trend with the chevy trucks i've had. 2 out of 3 developed bad compressors. part of it has to do with the defrost i think (maybe not, but i unhook the wire harness for the compressor in the winter). the air conditioner compressor kicks on and off to help the engine create more heat when you have the defrost on. i really think that's a bit much and i unhook it now. haven't had a problem since.

I will admit defeat here. I don't know anyone who owns those types of cars. I also don't think that any of those cars were built 200-300k at a time. I am not familair enough to say, but none of those seem to be grocery getters.
Gbodies, Bbodies where not performance cars whereras these cars seem to have performance in mind. Correct me if I am incorrect though, but I think you are comparing apples to oranges.

The exception is the Miatas. They are somewhat domestic being owned by ford.
Well when I typed that out I had muscle cars in mind because when I watch Barret Jackson those are mostly what I see selling in the 100k price range you mentioned.

I didn't realize you were talking about regular sedan type cars. As far as cars like that go, I don't think any brand new car in the price range up to the Camry, whether American or Japanese, will be sought after in the future. Your average economy sedan is just too boring and mass produced.

Sedans back in the day were just plain cool, with crazy shapes, huge chrome bumpers, and giant fins. Now these cars are just made to be as generic looking as possible to appeal to more people.

But the cars I could see being of some value would be the more expensive luxury brands, like Cadillac, Lexus, BMW, etc.

I'm a big fan of Honda myself... but I'm not exclusive to them. I've had:

1) 1989 Pontiac Firebird V6

2) 1990 Honda CRX Si

3) 1995 Pontiac Firebird V6 (still running @ 165k miles w/ my cousin)

4) 1999 BMW 323i

5) 2002 BMW 325i

6) 2007 Dodge Caliber (own now)

7) 1994 Honda Civic DX (own now)

I'm selling the Caliber and buying a 1999 Honda Civic Si -- so I will have two Honda vehicles. I'm trying to take down my monthly payments to invest in a house... which is the only real reason to drop the Caliber (my parents are buying it from me).

If you are wondering about the BMWs... I wrecked (totalled) the 99' and traded in the 02' due to power steering problems w/ 100k (just for parts to do it myself it would have been $1000). The PS problems traced back to a shop putting the wrong fluid in during a flush... but it took 6 months to break stuff, so I couldn't prove anything. Other than that the only thing I replaced on the 02' was all four window regulators... engine and ****** were like new.

That will teach me to take a car anywhere for even a simple service... I almost always do my own work but I was too busy that time. I will at least double and triple check their work from now on if I HAVE to take one in.

My Dad had a 1991 GMC Sierra with zero problems at 110k miles (low miles, yes). My Mom is now selling her 1998 Pontiac mini-van with 125k miles with no major problems in it's history.

I believe that, for the most part, most vehicles will last a long time with proper maintainace except some lemon cars out there. Some really BAD design choices come to mind too... GM places the ignition setup under the water pump in some year *****-Ams for one thing.

I'm still a Honda fan, though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Good cars all-in-all... I think they look alot nicer than any domestic "econo" car if you are shopping used. A Cavalier or Sunfire simply looks bad next to a Civic if you ask me. The Focus is one of the few exceptions... I actually like those for an "econo" car and they are a good value for the dollar, IMHO, but I still prefer the Civic.

Bingo. My family has been all domestic, and I can only think of a few instances where something went before it should have. I know people with Honda and Toyota who are the same way. They all take their cars to shops we trust, or are serviced personally.

Transmission on '01 Grand Prix...in '02.

Washer fluid pump on '93 Inreprid. The motor was below the actual fluid, so any slight leak would just drip onto the motor, eventually causing a sieze, which it did.

My mom's '97 van we beat to hell. Mom drives rough, steers quickly. Two teenagers learned to drive in it. As such, shocks have gone twice, one from being overloaded when we moved, ******, and now CV joints.

People who don't wash their cars, or take the right steps get rust. People who don't keep up on their suspension get a visit from bad bearings and other damaged parts FROM VIBRATION. Engine is self explanatory.

You would think that people would try to understand what they're spending over 30 g's on.

I still have yet to see that wanted guy post because he was pwnt so bad, lol! Faulkton yet again FTW!

I also agree with you Faulkton, I test drove many vechichels when I bought my Ford Focus. I wanted the Focus cause it was more comfortable to me. I was already upside down some, so had to be careful not to get to high of a car, but was close to getting a Honda Si or a VW GTi, but ended up with the Focus after rebates, car show incentives and what not, I could not go wrong. Runs great to this day and I get on it pretty hard sometimes. I am happy with my decision, only thing it lacks is room for 5, lol! I am dealing with it though.

WTF are you smoking? How many GM vehicles ever see 100K, I know mine didn't before I had to replace the engine. Camry's are excellent and reliable cars. They have a high re-sale value for a reason other than people are stupid.
hey *** boy. there are plenty of GM's that can last well past 100k

I guess you dont know how to take care of your car. you just put ugly shit on it.

oh wells. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/*******.gif.a649d21efc0d1fd4890a6428166586c1.gif

This is the stupidest idea that GM has ever conceived. I cannot speak for the camry, but the accord is simply the best car in its class. It sets the standard for reliability, performance, resale value and value for money. Saturn doesn't know what they're getting themselves into. This could be more idiotic than AskDrZ (albeit different corporation).
