SO who determines the value of the clunker? I just took parts off an 87 Monte that they were overcharging for. Door panels, and the stereo bezel were mint, but they wanted more than 100 for the stuff. I talked them down to 75 out the door. The junker can easily make a grand off that car, but that's slow money. And they have to destroy the car within a certain period of time.
So with that being said, everybody wins. I win because I can find decent parts for my car. The auto industry can sell cars. Buyers get a new car, sellers are moving product.
