Why do I need to connect to left an right speakers for signal

Hooking up self powered p300 sub. Wire harness has 4 speaker wires but can I make it work just hooking up one set of speaker wires

You can, but most music is recorded in stereo. You may miss out on some power input and music program by doing so. This is from hindsight.
