which comps are best

The best comps are the complaints that come from people that ask things like these and then go e-listen to them online.

Do yourself a favor and go listen to some, if you can't then buy the most expensive set you can find.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

If you already had speakers in this current vehicle, why are you 'updgrading?' What more do you want from them? What would you like to change in the speakers you have now? Imaging? Volume? Midbass? Tweeter characteristics? Are you installing them correctly? Are you deaf? Do you have any hearing disabilities at all? Are you using compressed music? Original recordings? iPud?...There are a lot of factors that should be considered before putting money into something more expensive when in the end you might as well put on some head phones because your door won't make the new sets happy.

But if all that is solved, then I apologize for wasting your time. Continue to e-listen.

well i untimatly want loud crisp sound and i cant get that with the comps i have now which are the alpine s types, and i actually have no way to listen to any good sets as the audio shops near to me have the budget stuff on display and you can hear the good stuff, the best i heard were some audio system comps but the shop was selling them for too much.

about the car doors, they are standard doors on a vw golf mk4 i dont have any sound dedaning

so which comps do you think i should get with that in mind, seeing as i wont be able to listen to any sets because no1 i know has any good comps

I have a MKIV GTI with the Type X's in there. Lightly deadened, nothing extreme...so I can't say how the X's would sound in a stock door. The mids are fairly deep mounting, so I'd recommend fabricating spacers out of MDF....there's about 3" of space between the factory speaker mount and the panel grill, so plenty of room for spacers.

If you want something that sounds good with or without deadening (IMO, of course), then check into something like the Polk Momo's. Between all the comps I auditioned in my price range, it came down to the X's and Momo's. I loved the midbass on the Momo's, but I feel the clarity and detail of the X's can't be beat in the $150-200 price range. I haven't auditioned the Rainbow SLC 265's, but they are getting quite some attention (which I can't discern between them being just a huge forum boner or really that good since I have not auditioned them yet).

Comps I auditioned:

1. Diamond D661A and S

2. Infinity Kappa and Perfect

3. Polk dB6500, Momo MMC6500, and Sig Ref SR6500 (I wanted the SR's sooo bad, but didn't have the ducats for 'em)

4. Alpine Type S, Type R and Type X 6.5's

5. Kicker RS and KS

6. Clarion Phaze 1

All comps were running off a Diamond amp with 38.5W RMS per channel.

Took a while to run all over town and listen to various comps, but the results were well worth it and really paid off.

well i supose im gona get the X types then also, would i be able to buy some spacers so i can fit the woofer in the door, cos i have them for my S types so i can just use them ones, also were have you put the comps in the stock location and where have you put the crossovers, also did you do it yourself as i need the screw driver to unscrew the pannels is it a pozi driver which i need.

would my x types get louder then yours as i would have 75w rms per channel

Worthless post. That's what people do here -- ask for other members' opinions about products.

For a lower cost option look at this post:

The PG RSd comps are supposed to be very nice.

Thing is, most of the mid line comps work fine off of 75-100 watts. Some will give more highs, midrange, and/or midbass than others. The differences are there and that is a very subjective thing.

Chances are, if you get a better set than you have now and you take a few extra steps installing them and tuning them, you will get better sound. You just have to find the sound YOU like.

which ones out of the alpine SPX and mb quart give the louder output with 75watt rms and the cleaner sound, to sum up which would you go for if you had 75watt rms at your disposal
You can skip the PE's they are power hungry.

If SQ is your real interest, Either the X's or the Q's will work fine on 75rms.

You must spend some time setting these up, To get the best SQ from them.

Again the X"s reproduce best. The Q's have a warmer bandpass with Midbass kit added.

clearly im a newb to this, so how would you go about setting up the speakers correctly

1. would i be able to buy some spacers so i can fit the woofer in the door

2. also were have you put the comps in the stock location and where have you put the crossovers

3. also did you do it yourself as i need the screw driver to unscrew the pannels is it a pozi driver which i need.

4. would my x types get louder then yours as i would have 75w rms per channel
1. You can, but I highly recommend going MDF instead of cheap plastic. It'll make a difference in the SQ.

2. I've got my xovers under the seats for right now. They'll be moved to the trunk at some point in my life.

3. I didn't do the tear down of my car myself. I left that up to a local and renown shop.

4. If you do the install correctly, then yours will be sounding just as good. Mine are running off channels 1+2 of an Infinity 7541a amp (rated 111W RMS per channel @ 4 Ohms).

1. Take some time and familiarize yourself with the Type X passive xovers and what the owner's manual has to say about them. Lots and lots of settings in there! (link is the 3.6MB PDF owners manual from Alpine's web site).

2. Deaden. Even if it's a minimal job, if done right will audibly improve your SQ. The Second Skin door speaker pad kits are getting pretty decent reviews. Think I'm going to try them out. Current price is around $25 which included 2 pads and 2 sheets of 11x11" damplifier.

3. Use MDF spacers for the mids. Really.

Enjoy! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

as an owner of the type x and pioneer prs sets. I can say that they sound similar. the prs get deeper and is a little livelier on the top but still very mellow overall. I would say that they are one of the best sounding comp sets that I have heard. If you want a real forward top end I would look elsewehre but if you like just a little snap and wonderful sound look no farther as the prs set is in its own world at these prices.

If you really, really deaden your doors it will make more of a difference than which of those 4 sets you choose. If you don't they will all sound like chit.
