when to get a new battery?

my car's about 15 years old now, been taken well care of, used by my grandpa only 60k miles. im going to upgrade the sound system, not too much, just 1 sub, 2 amps, comps and a deck.

should i upgrade the battery while im already under the hood, or do i not need a new battery at all? everything seems to run fine, but it doesnt bother me to spend a little extra money on a new battery.

also suggestions for batteries would be nice too, i was hearing good things about optima yellow and red

i would do a optima red under the hood...then i would do a yellow top in the trunk with a iso..but that is if u need an extra battery..first i would hook everything up and see if u are havin voltage drops..and if so ..get an alt first...then worry aobut an other batt

dont even get an alternator just yet, theres a big-3 upgrade which helps reduce dimming, voltage drops AND strain on your electrical system.

if the battery in the car now is fine, use it. im not sure if you can check if its still running strong or have over 50% life left, but i think autozone or a local auto department can test it?

a battery isnt much helpful when it comes to your electrical system... unless you play the music with the car off. since you dont have major plans for a hardcore system, a upgraded battery isnt really neccesary unless your current one is dying on you. you should be more worried about your alternator since its gonna be struggling depending on what kind of system your running.
