Whats wrong with turning the gain up all the way

if I turn the gain all the way up and put my volume to 3 out of 60, i have a strong feeling your answer doesnt hold much water.
what if I turn the gain all the way up and turn the sub level all the way down, where is your smarty pants answer now?
how the fuck what that a smart pants answer? Tell me that.

I left stuff out, yes I did and I know I did. I gave a simplified answer, nothing more, nothing less

ok so say my sub is bottoming out on the faster bass parts.. i just put it at around 60/80 vol or so and adjust the gain until it stops doing that right?

I'd assume you aren't getting the full potentional of your woofer if you turn the sub level down

1. Turn gain all the way down

2.Turn head unit volume to 80% on bass heavy song

3.Turn gain up until you start to hear the moofer distorting

You should be close

I'm enjoying this thread, actually learning a few things. I always thought the higher the gain more watts? but someone said the gain dont have to be full tilt to get the full power, This true?
if you have an 8v pre-out deck you certainly dont have to turn the gain up nearly as much as if you have say a 2v pre-out deck. If you decide to wang the gain on the 8v deck, you'll reach max output at a much much lower level on the volume if you kept the deck settings the same.

in fact read your manual or the amp, usually it will say near the lowest level the gain knob can go something like "8v" and then if you were to look at max gain maybe something like ".5v" or ".8v" or the like.

Did you not understand my post?

Please don't tell me you're honestly falling for the crap these guys are spewing...

"pre-out voltage"?

"clipping"?

"amplifier"?

What kinda bs made up terms are those?

They can't even get their story right so they're arguing back and forth...please don't become yet another victim of ca.com's trolling crowd, it may be fun to take advantage of noobs, but it's not right imo and sometimes it just goes too far. Look what happened to King Ranch...poor guy

Well rethink your answer there. It's not clipping itself that kills a sub. It's the increased area under the curve because a square wave has more area than a sine wave. So it is actually the additional power that is killing the sub, because that extra power might end up over driving the sub past it's physical and thermal limits.
This is an interesting concept i've stumpled on, but questionable. is it really that extra amount of power that kills the sub because that little extra power exceeeded the woofer's mechanical/thermal limit? for instance, type Rs are rated at 500rms, but tons of people have thrown well over the RMS rated power without any issues. Looking a the below photo, the extra area from each side of the maximum value of the pure signal causes the woofer to fail?
