whats the problem?

dont use a/c volt wire for d/c volts. get that wire out it will catch fire. seen it happen.
d/c voltage travels on the surfus of the wire there for when you see wire for d.c its got lots of little strains.

a/c voltage travels though the wire thats why a/c wire is soild or big strands.

d/c is what is in your car

guy i knew used all #6 wire for a/c in his car he started a fire from the resiston on the wire cuzing heat.
Thanks alot I didn't know that. I will take it out in the morning. I dont plan on driving the car anyway until I get more wire.

the wire could have had something to do with it. see that your running a/c volt wire. i had thaT problem once i came out in the morring and battires where dead. it was becuse of my starter being bad. i think, i got a new starter never had the problem again.

i dont know if that was the real problem with my battire dieing it only happend that one time and i check twice there was nothing left on. most of the time and i say most cuz its not always true but battires usely die if there too old and cant take a charge anymore. or there is something draining on them. if there older they could just be bad and not take a charge there for they wont hold a charge but will read they did with the car running or a charger on them. i could be wrong, theres a good possibledy. i am wrong.

It might have been the wire. I just recently put a starter on so I know thats not the problem. If something was left on my other battery would have been affected its fine. Im going to make sure its dead. Im going to take it somewhere eles to get tested in a little while.

Did you buy it used? If so DONT. Resting voltage doesnt mean shit like you found out. It could have been your alt too, you said it doesnt put out at idle, so basically at a stop light or cruising when your rpm is low like 1500 the whole system is running off the batteries ONLY. Thats why you get a HO alt. They are rebuilt and designed to charge at idle. Some I have seen are 250a and do 150a at idle.

didnt really trust advance with battery testing so i took the battery to a battery shop they told me the battery was good. im going to take it back to advanced and tell them what they said and let them test it again. my alt is fine also so im pretty sure its the wire. i will see when i swap it out.

OK, let's start this over...

Wire doesn't care whether AC or DC is passing through it. Ampacity is based on the area of the conductor, not what kind of voltage is passing through it. The person you know who roasted his wire would have done the same thing had he used wire labeled for car audio use, it burned because 6awg was too small of a gauge for that current draw and length of wire.

Solid vs. stranded has nothing to do with AC or DC. It comes down to what's economical to use, or is more convenient. Ever taken apart an RCA cable? Hint - chances are it's not a solid center conductor //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Skin effect is frequency dependent - it doesn't happen with DC. It's an AC phenomenon only - and you don't have to worry about it until you start getting into radio frequencies. Then, it can play a major role. But at audio? Not significant.

well i charged my back batt yesterday and got it tested today. it rested at 12.84 volts but only had 160ca so its bad. idk how it could have died.
the cd only had 160 ca? its a backup battery so Idk that it would have a lot... you may need to look at that.. its purpose wasn't for cranking..

i dont use this batter for cranking. this is how they tested it at Advance. its suppose to be 1140cca so thats what i told them ut it seems they dont know how to test batteries ecaus a local battery shop tested it as good. i dont know what the problem is. if the batteries are fine guess it the wire or the alt.

I will tell you this.. I was at the shop with my sister they were working on her car.. I was in the bay with them as they tested the battery.. Said it was good.. Literally 2 seconds later went to start the car and it wouldn't.. oh... battery is bad... So wtf was the point of the machine if it was wrong???

idk i know if i need my battery or alt tested i wont be taking it to them.
