what system

1.000 maybe more if needed what brands are good to?
there's alot.

TC sounds, Stereo Integrity, Incriminator Audio, Digital Designs (i think?) Image Dynamics, JL Audio, Kicker, Resonant Engineering, (though Usamps bought them out and now they're overpriced andmainstream), Fi Audio (former owner of Resonant Engineering), Adire Audio (tho they're CS is horrible and they had alot of failed MKIII Brahma drivers which i had 2 and 1 was messed up), then the other AA name (assassins/arsenals), etc. too many to list.

also depends on if you're looking for spl, sq, sql, how much room you have to work with, and factor in upgrading your car's electrical system as well.

so if it can be had from a car audio shop it isnt worth getting? lol
product markup is rediculous in stores. you can get shit alot cheaper online, ESPECIALLY with internet brands that no one hardly knows about IE Fi Audio.

car audio shops are good to go to demo stuff and browse around, get info, and whatnot, but don't buy from them unless you want them to **** you, and then if you have them install it, be hella careful, cuz i've heard horror install stories from people on here and i'd just rather do it myself anyways.

x2 on all of that

Fi seems to be the new forum boner.......find them at http://www.ficaraudio.com

online is the way to buy

if you wanna go cheap you can go with the sony's i have....they're entry level but do a decent job for a low budget sub.......

in my opinion......subs do make a difference but the hu and amps make alot more of the difference....crappy hu and amps equals crappy sound no matter what sub you're pushing it into......same with components....research this forum.....ask alot of questions and decide what your wants are before you buy......don't just take any one persons opinion as gospel because you might not have the same tastes they do.........but alot of what dkguitarist said is pretty much right on

edit: some car audio shops are very good while some are very bad......ask for referances before dropping tons of cash at one......and if you don't mind....look into used equipment.....some stores sell it at a big discount to spankin' new stuff
