What sub and where to put it in a 93 camaro?

Hello,

A friend of mine just bought a 93 Camaro.

The trunk is pretty much useless for a bigger sub.

What would be your recommentation to get the most bang in the trunk.

Besides the BOSE stock system he has right now nothing, so he needs a amp and a sub.

Budget is about $1k - $1.5k.

Due to the size of the trunk, it very likely has to be a closed enclosure....?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Alex

for 1-1.5k ... your selection is ungodly large, lol...
what kind of sound is he going for... pure spl, sq, sql, deep bass, punchy bass, etc...
Thanks for your quick reply.

It does not need to be a super SQ system, it should play pretty low but also fast for some rock music.

Well, by the time you add all the cables, terminals and all the other odds and ends....$1k- $1.5k is used up rather quickly I'm afraid.

Alex

well, there are tons of options. what deminsions does he have to work with?
well, I guess the space will be the biggest issue.

The trunk of the camaro is small to say the least.

He would like to use the space were the roof pannels usually sit.

Its about 35 x 12 x 15 inch...... the 15 inch being the height.

Alex

just so i can figure out what he can fit... is it 35 wide, 12 deep, 15 high?
Yes, this is correct.

yes. that is about how mine is. expect i have a little more depth. i would say do one 12 ported
there is actually a little more space dept-wise, but I want to make sure the enclosure clears the trunk lock.

Do you think this is enough space for a ported 12"?

Thanks for your help.

Alex

i would suggest a single ssa xcon 12"... with the dimensions you have, your looking at roughly 2.4-2.5 ft cubed... so that, tuned to around 33 hz...

as for the amp, an AQ2200D would work well... which are usually on sale on this forum like once a week for around 300 bucks..

if you can find one for 300 bucks, your looking at in between 6-700, for amp and sub. then another 100 for box materials (if he's building himself)... prolly 250, to get it built.

another 100 for wiring, terminals, other misc...

what are we up to so far.... in between 900-1150

then an upgraded batt... 9a31/xs d3100... around 200 bucks (if you look for a deal on it)

and a small batt for the back... about another 100 bucks (just try to keep it above 100 ah)

just my suggestions

thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not familiar with either brand.... 5 years ago I was pretty involved in car hifi, back then you only heard about MTX, RE and Treo woofers....

I just browsed around the net for the sub and amp you've suggested, I only found positive reviews.... So this combo will be on the "to consider" list.

You wrote he should replace the battery and add a second on in the trunk, back then, THE batterie to get was the dry cell Optima, is this still the case?

I have saved 2 Hifi shops in my favorites, one of them is SonicElectronics, the other one is DealerCostCarAudio.... are these still the "go to" shops?

Where could I find a good deal on the Sub and on the Amp?

You said the amp comes up quite often here at the forum, would that be a used amp or BNIB?

thanks for the info... considering the available space, I think the sub would play in vertical position against the trunk lid or the metal enclosure of the axle...? Or is there enough space to mount the sub horizontal?

Thanks to both of you

optimas have definately been surpassed now by other companies, like deka, xs, stinger, etc... look at xs batteries.. really good quality

sonic is a good place... dealer cost, not so much....

to find an AQ on here, it's usually going to be used... but they are VERY robust amps... and usually, you can pick them up off here in excellent condition for around 300.

if its been 5 years since you've really been in the game, i think a single xcon in a ported box would astound you... they are THAT good of subs... just gotta make sure you got the proper box, electrical, and amp for them

thanks again for your quality information.

I guess I'm now more excited about this project than my buddy :)

I will check on xs batteries.

What would be your recommended HU in the $300 - $450 range?
