im down to 4 diff laptops:

dell xps 1530

dell inspirion 1500 series

sony vaio

Asus m51sr-a1 15.4"

inputs?

not really a gamer, using for college, big movie burner, and tons of music either d/l, streaming, or playing, photochop and scanning are also nice..

(the reason i have so many dells is i will get discounts through my university, and i will also get 3yr in dorm warranty for rather cheap..)

i will be adding ram to any laptop i get myself to be 3+gig, and will get an intel t7250 or higher processor installed.

go..

The xps 1530 is a great laptop. I own the 1330 myself. If you can get the 9 hour battery. It really comes in handy. I've owned a Sony Vaio, and while it was a great laptop, it quit on me after about 3 years. The internal power supply failed. That being said Asus makes great computers.

My vote:

1. Asus m51sr-a1

2. Dell XPS M1530

3. Sony Vaio

4. Dell Inspiron 1500

No Dells

They use cheap *** parts (even in their XPS line). I've had the "Award-winning" Inspiron 6000 for a little under 3 years. I've burned through three motherboards, three ac adapters, one lcd screen, one keyboard, the case that holds the lcd, and the hinges that attach said casing to the base. And I treat my laptop VERY well.

The only redeaming feature is the customer service. But I would gladly trade the quick turn-around time for a computer that didn't need to take advantage of it every three months.

try this one...
macbook
no.

my budget is ~1-1.2k for laptop and ram..and then any warranty on top of that..

the inspirion by far i can get the best processor, HD, and amount of ram for cheapest by ~$3-500 cheaper than the rest.

the xps will cost 1200ish before the ram upgrade and will have a standard SATA 120gig HD(5400rpm)

idk about asus to be honest, ive heard very good things but ive never seen in person.

and for the vaio, its very similar to the dells in the group and costs about 1200 for a decently equiped one.

My mom had a dell laptop. Loved it. she isn't computer smart at all, but maybe thats a good thing?

she had no problems with it until she poked a hole in the screen. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

edit: I'm looking at the dell laptop...and i don't think an integrated graphics card will do well with vista.

lol, i was like 99% on specs and prices when looking online at the inspirion online, but when i saw it in person, it was rather big and extremely dull..i like the xps's line due to style, but its prices are soo much higher comparative to coupons and deals i can get on the inspirion..

If you're in school, $1272 gets you a MacBook with 2.1ghz core2duo, 2gb ram, 120gb hdd 5400 rpm, and the apple care protection plan.

And $1382 gets you a MacBook with 2.4 Ghz Core2Duo, 2 gb ram, 160gb 5400rpm hdd, superdrive, and protection plan

Hey, I'm looking at the Dell Latitude D630- for small business. Seems like a killer deal to me:

14.1" screen

8x DVD Burner

120GB 7200rpm HD

2.5Ghz T9300 intel dual core

128mb NVidia Quatro NVS 135 for:

1169

w/ a ram upgrade your looking at about 1270 or so....

if you didn't think you need that fast of a processor or HD, you could get a 2.2 (T7500) and a 5400 rpm drive (same size) for 145 less.
