What Fuse To Use?

Okay I'm a first timer and just set up my 2 JL 12w0's with a RF Punch 801s amp (800RMS) I wired everything up and was testing out my speakers.. I was playing with the stock EQs on the head unit and when I went to a very Bass-Heavy Rock EQ it hit a high and then my subs shut off... I then determined the fuse in my inline fuse relay box had blown.. it was a 30W (is it watts or amps?) anyways it was a 30.. how do I know if that was the right size to use? I just used it from the amp wiring kit.

It was a 30AMP fuse, your Rockford amp can easily exceed that so just step up to a larger fuse.

What size is the main power wire and ground?, it sounds a little small if it only comes with a 30 amp fuse. An 800watt RMS amp wouls really prefer a 4gauge wire kit.

well i just picked up a wiring kit from pep boys... didnt know there were a lot of different types of kits but i just bought lightning audio's one figuring it's a good brand but i haven't checked the actual gauge of the wire.. i figured all wiring kits would give you the same gauge power wire.. what amp fuse should i go with would you figure?

Not all kits are the same, some are rated for larger systems, where you will be pulling more amps. Anyway, for the RF amp, you should be using at least 8 ga if not 4 ga wire, and for 4 gauge wire you want to use around a 100 amp fuse. Dont get anything bigger cause when you do have a short in your system, you actually want the fuse to blow out. Thats what protects your amps or head unit from frying like an egg. With fuses, you can always get one below the maximum rating, just dont get one larger. BUT dont get one too small either. Try looking for a slow burn fuse too, these are engineered to take the quick "peaks" in amperage draw when you first start the system. Fast burn fuses are way more sensitive and will blow at any slight change in the rating of amps.

so i should just pick up a 100amp fuse from pep boys i guess? do you thinkk the Lightning Audio amp kit would have screwed me with the gauge of the wire?

no, they didnt screw you, you just didnt read the box, and make sure the fuse will fit, my viper had 3 30a fuses, they were small, my 4ga wire had a 100a fuse it was alot bigger so make sure it will fit in fuse holder, i like anl fuses better they are for cool people:)

no, they didnt screw you, you just didnt read the box,
Exactly. You might be able to return the kit and get the correct one. It should clearly say on the package the size wire. It will say something like 4 gauge, or 4 ga... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

yeah you know what the problem was.. out of all the reading i had done about installing an amp kit i never saw anything regarding getting the right size wire.. so i went looking for kits but only saw ONE kit and figured maybe you only need one type of kit.. so i got that one..

i went back and checked and found out my power wire is 10awg.. also what type of fuse will i have to buy? the only shit pep boys had was like 60amps at most and was a round tube of a fuse instead of the Dual Pronged fuse i have installed now...

can someone just recommend a website for me to order the 4awg wire and a fuse? i dont think i need a new kit.. just those 2 components

ok where should i cop the new kit at then? not a fan of buyin shit online.. i live in ny but im not sure where the best spot would be to get a good kit..

walmart has car electronics? ite ill check it out.. should i just be looking to drop 30 on a kit or are there names i should stay away from?

fukin noobs think they run dis biatch...
I'm gone a couple weeks i come back and hear bullshiit advice???????
Who you calling a noob mane? a 100 amp fuse can be used in 4 gauge wire safely. He did not know what size wire he had, so we didnt either jerkwad. And the simple fact that you actually recommend WallyWorld as an audio equipment source is the icing on this cake....so I must say to you..STFU

I have to agree with the member who posted KnuKoncepts website, I get most of my wiring from them. Great interconnects and wiring, PLUS really great customer service and cheap prices.
