dont need a compas find the center of the area your gonna draw the circle cut a string 1/2 the lengnt of the hole + a lil extra .... put a screw in the middle of the area u wanna drill the hole... tie the extra to the screw... hold string out with fingers put a pencil in other hand and let the fingers holding the scring guide you... works quite well when u have nothing better....

if you can find pieces of thin sheet metal strips withholes drilled in them they work a lil better, but the string thing works quite well

there's so much variation with that technique though, what i've done in the past is get a metal ruler and drill two small holes in it (the radius apart) and put a nail through one at the center and then a pencil through the other hole..a little less variation but i'd still like to have a nice compass.
