Sounds like my father almost. The doctor did not want to do surgery on him until he couldn't walk. It was to the point that he could only walk maybe 10ft and then have to sit down. But he could not sit down to long because the the numbness and burning throughout his legs. He was advised that during/after surgery that there was a possibility (50% chance) of paralyses of his legs. Luckily he is walking, but it's been a slow and long recovery period.
It's going to **** at first, I know from previous surgeries. But take it slow and follow any instructions from physical therapy and you should be good.
