Weird smell

Ok, so I finally got all my crap installed in my car. With my luck though, it probably isn't working right... First off the dash kit doesn't fit my car, even though it says "2003 Honda Pilot". Second, the head unit doesn't work with my model of iPod gosh dammit. Third, there's this weird smell coming from the port in the box.

Here's the order of events.

Plugged everything in and went on a test drive. Didn't turn the volume up that loud.

Drove to school and back, turned the volume up a little louder

The gosh **** power cable came unplugged, then I plugged it back in.

Drove my brother to tennis, and on the way back, there was this smell that smelled like puke for some reason, then it smelled kind of like burning rubber.

I even switched the amps out from a 460 RMS to a 300 RMS to make sure I wasn't overpowering it that much... (At least I think it's 300 RMS, I have an Infinity 1600a, and it's only hooked to one channel, but the sub is wired at 4 ohms, so I guess I don't even know what wattage is going to it. The amp says it's 600 rms @ 2 ohms and that it's a mono block, but there's 2 speaker input things. I don't even know, its really pissing me off.)

I think I might have blown a voice coil or something, melted something inside the sub, or there's some weird smelling thing inside the box that he put there as a prank. The only thing is, it only happens at high volumes, so I think I might be melting something inside the box.

I just want my **** DD 2512.

Anyway, that was a huge *** post. If anyone has some insight, please share it.

Go ahead and flame me for this, I probably really screwed something up.

Oh yeah, and my gain isn't set right i don't think. It's around 1/4 the way up. I think I'll just take this shit out and figure it out when I get the DD. The amp pisses me off the most, I can't figure out if I need to bridge it, if it really is 2 channels, how its 2 channels, how to get it to put out 600 @ 2 ohms, what I even need to set my gain to, etc.

Is the sub new?
It was in my friend's car for about a year before I bought it.. I was originally using it on the amp I bought it off my friend with (he used it for a year like that) and I had the gain and everything set the same. Maybe my turning the bass up on the HU messed it up? I have no clue. I thought I knew more about this than I did.

from the beginning " my power wire fell out", which means that the whole install was a big rush job... just take it in to a local car audio place and throw them some doe... sounds like you dont have a clue whats , what and shouldnt be touching anything.... ALL IN FAVOR SAY ,"I"

Alright. I spent a long time running all the wires and was really careful about all of it. It was my first install. I read something about the screws shattering or stripping really easy so I only screwed them down enough to keep the wire in place pretty well, but I guess it wasnt enough.

SHOULDNT BE ANY SMELL EVEN IF IT IS BRAND NEW... GROUND IS IMPORTANT AS ANYTHING, AND I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU... IM NOT GOING TO TYPE STEP BY STEP... I PEED A LITTLE WHEN I READ YOUR FIRST THREAD... SCARY

nice response man

if the sub is stinking, Id definately double check the wiring there, and also set your gain conservatively with a dmm, if you need assistance in using one to do this, look for the gain setting tutorial, itll walk you through the process

I looked at that, and I'm probly gonna sound like a retard again, but when I click on the link to it, the only posts I see are ones with people discussing it, not the tutorial itself.

if you can use the dmm, this table should be all you need

Awesome, thanks for putting up with my noobness. I have a cheap *** dmm, I'll check that all out tomorrow.

It just seems wierd, the gain was at like 1/8th on the kenwood amp, thats when it started stinking, then when I put it on the infinity, it was at around 1/5th to 1/6th the way up.. but whatever, Ill check it tomorrow.
