Weird problem, any help?

I recently installed a Jensen 2610 cd player/amfm into my 91 Cougar :)/)

The directions however forgot to mention to connect one of the wires to the ground on the harness, which is apparently the wire for my lights. But after that it worked, only that it switches on/off when i turn my lights on/off. I can live with that.

But when I was testing the sound/volume/bass treble etc it stopped working.

The LCD doesnt give off any type of light now, but it shows that theres power b/c the power button is lit up. None of the buttons on the faceplate work. It shows like a faint AM 12:00 but then dims again and shows nothing occasionaly.

I really dont know what to do atm, and if theres a way to do it w/o taking off my dash again and taking the whole thing out; itd be very helpful. And if i have to take it off, id need to figure out what wires to change because frankly im new at this :/

Thanks in advance.

First thing...the wire for your lights should NOT be hooked up to your ground in any way. You my friend are asking for trouble.

Second thing...Do you not think that you would be better going to a shop?

Last...did you just cut all the wires behind your head unit or did you buy a factory harness from say walmart or a local shop?

You will need to have the yellow hooked up to the battery wire from the harness (yellow)

You will need the power on/ off(red) hooked up to its corresponding acc wire (red)

You will need a ground...THIS WILL NOT BE AN ILLUMINATION WIRE. You are risking fire as is. They usually are black, but your car may be different. Do you have a multi meter?

Okay, I went back into everything and looked at it, I was wrong in the original post

This is how the wiring is setup

When I go to turn on the Jensencd2610 there is no blue light like there used to be, and it shows a very dim time.

I thought something came loose while I was testing the bass etc but nothing did.

I do however think that something else happened to it while it was on, I did not attach the end of the perforated support strap to the screw stud on the rear of the chassis.

It says in the direction book that it must be done to prevent damage to the dashboard from the weight of the radio or improper operation due to vibration.

Did I **** up my brand new thing already? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

On the left harness there is a red wire that also has an orange wire attached to it...It looks to be a dimmer or illumination wire. Un hook the orange wire from the red wire, it does not belong there.

Other then that I dont really see anything wrong. If the radio still doesnt work you may have to either buy another one or try and get it fixed.

Lastly, I would go buy some butt connectors instead of useing black electrical tape. They will last longer and be safer then the tape alone.

Yea it is the illumination one. But even before the problem started on original installation the radio didnt even turn on or show any sign of power, so we messed around and that one gave it life, at the expense of my lights which was no problem.

I'll see if i can get it fixed though, how much would that run me anyway? Was only an 80 dollar cd player and 25 harness :/
