Weird knocking sound - I'm a totally clueless

So how am I supposed to push on it then? Just curious?
All the forums I searched on suggested applying a slight amount of pressure, not just a little baby tap, to around the sub to see if it makes a scrapping sound?
If your going to push on it even pressure all the way around if it goes in/out with no rubbing it's fine any speaker will make that noise if you apply pressure to one side of the cone( it's only held center by the cloth spiders and rubber/foam surround) what you will end up doing if you continue to do that is rub/wear the epoxy off the voice coil wire (which is nothing more then an electro magnet)once there is a spot where electricity can make contact on the vc(no more epoxy) the speaker is ruined and will most likely burn on that spot or heat up the solder on the tinsels causing them to come undone.

The best method for pushing in a speaker cone, is to not push it in. People do this all the time to 'feel for coil rub'. Well, if you cant guarantee you are pushing the coil exactly straight down, and you cant, then you cant be sure any coil rub you feel (or dont feel) is not simply due to your improper pressure. About the only thing pushing the cone in is good for is to simply see if the motor is actually locked up, which is fairly rare anyway.

good point I guess the best way to see if the vc is damaged would be a dmm, but I still do the push test to check for mushrooming at the bottom of the coil former that's one thing that a dmm will not pick up and it will make a hell of a sound.
