Weird Compaq PC problem

LOL where is Chase007 when you need him.

Might be the memory. Try replacing that first and see what happens. It should take DDR2 memory if it's 2 years old. that memory is cheap now. Like 20 ish bucks.

i put brand new pny memory in it, no change. No matter what i do it boots the same, hell i booted it with no hard drive or memory and got no errors just the same thing. Im sure the mobos fried, which was my original suspicion. But why would the hard drive be fried as well?

onboard video or a video card?

Its the motherboard... doesn't need ANY visual "burn marks" to be fried.

The harddrive could have easily gone when the motherboard did if the harddrive was being written onto at the time of failure.

Try taking the video card out and going with the onboard video. I would also check the pins on the monitor cable to make sure they are not bent. It may very well be the board, but you should try everything you can before making that determination.

tried that. the monitor works fine too. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

i would try power supply, if you can get into the bios then i have doubt its a motherboard issue, althought the no beeping when ram isnt in it is very odd, if youve replaced or taken out the video card and still nothing i would try in this order

power supply

ram

motherboard, last option.

Ive had very good luck with compaq computers...the one im using now is an old HP from like 98 and its still kicking.

I dont see how the PSU would effect it, it starts fine, all the fans run full RPM, the lights on the cd drives come on, i can eject and close them easily, etc. I will try swapping one in there though, i have extras.
